I'll start my thread off first so people can get an idea on how I think this should develop, starting with a bit of information on kit etc.

I started getting interested in digital photography in 2002 and started off with a very basic Kodak point and shoot. This was upgraded in 2004 to a Canon A85 which, after dead pixels were found, was replaced by an A95.

Getting used to that took a little time as the majority of pictures were taken on full auto mode. After seeing just what could be achieved with a little creativity I started using the settings which required some kind of manual input and, having started to get used to the camera promptly replaced it with a EOS 350D with both the kit lens and the 50mm F1.8 MkII

It's early days at the time of posting, but here follows a few pictures taken from the first weekend with the camera.

Here's a 'Bristol Pete' inspired shot I took today. I'm a bit narked that the weather has been so bad this week otherwise I may have been able to get out without getting soaked. Tried a bike ride today and it rained most of the way so I didn't want to get my camera out for fear of getting it too wet :(

Kind of reflected my mood

Absolutely nowhere

Finally managed to get out today and had a walk from our house down into Ironbridge, a really nice place to take pictures. We try as much as possible to stay off roads and stick to the many 'trails' which run through the area.

First moment that the camera came out was when we walked past this old factory site, the chimney still stands but this is all thats left of whatever it was that was there :)

1/4000 f4.5 ISO 1600 yeah, i know, forgot to change it

Messed about with this quite a bit to get the kind of look I wanted, but the error in taking the picture originally didn't help :god:

One of the 'many' paths I mentioned earlier. This one runs all the way down into Coalbrookdale.

This path runs alongside a railway, but I have never seen a train use it.

I have noticed on a lot of these that the sky is very blown out, need to sort out why this is happening. Probably down to the fact i'm using the camera on Av mode because I can't quite get exposures in to my head as to what works and what doesn't. All of this is a learning curve :)

More views from the path, a waterfall. I took this handheld and pushed the exposure up and the aperture down, i'm quite proud my hand was steady

I really like like the rail line pictures and personally the eye follows the track and I did not even consider the sky until you mentioned it. I think the picture of Lorna looking over the fence is great too, superb DOF, but note that I do like them all.

Thanks Pete.

I took masses of pictures and these were the most prominent at first look. I might well go down to that place in the first picture again today as there is potential for some nice shots there I think. Think I will use full manual to see if I can sort this blown sky problem out. Just takes a bit of time to get used to the controls

Some superb shots there Steve. My highlights are the one of the bricks - really simple but effective and the one of the train tracks taken low down with the track curving off into the distance. Althought that last one would have been perfect if a train was in shot coming towards you but for obvious reasons pretty impossible to take!:rotfl:

A few from the Bank Holiday weekend.

Unfortunately, I was at work for both of the Bank Holiday days, but as it was quiet I went down the road to take some pictures of a new building that has been put up. It actually opened today as a massive food/grocery warehouse. Its massive and a real blot on the landscape.

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/350/monstrosity.jpg

and another view

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/350/monstrosity2.jpg

It can be seen clearly from over fields and there were actually Deer in the field in front of it, wonder what they think!

My best mate came round on Saturday night, was supposed to be a nice quiet night in but we ended up at various pubs singing karaoke. Took loads of pictures with the 50mm lens so have montaged a couple for your entertainment!

My good friend Ash.

God knows but those were taken a while apart. He semed to have a fixation with it for some reason :smoke: does funny things ;)

How did you do that montage effect Steve?

Pretty simple to be honest Pete. I just took the four pictures I wanted in the montage, resized them to 400 pixels across, added a 5 pixel border and then just dragged them into a new document, flattened the image then added a 10 pixel border round the lot.

Went to the Wychwood festival over the weekend which is a relatively new and small festival. Our first one of this year and a great opportunity to try out the Sigma 18-200 which I purchased especially for this type of event.

I have to say that overall I'm extremely happy with the lens, it would have been nice to have something a bit quicker but for the price I paid I think I have had a bargain.

Anyway, this is a shot of the racecourse main seating etc.

The first artist we saw was Mr. Billy Bragg.

This was a shot of Dreadzone from the first night, they had us jumping round like maniacs.......we were very suggestive at that point though

and, probably a lot more sober on the second day, the pictures improve slightly

Thanks for the comments folks.

I still have about 40-50 pictures that I have selected as 'ok' from the amount that I took which I have to resize and process for posting. I will endeavour to get those done as soon as I can. I am away next week in the Peak District so there will be a load more to go at

Jamie, Billy Bragg was actually really good and though I don't particularly like the constant political commentary the music stands up and the performance of 'Green Onions' was brilliant

Pete, All of the above have had some level of sharpening, mostly a 50% faded sharpen just to bring them out a bit. Having said that I am pleased with the results, especially as some of those are cropped from originals.

Zone, I missed Seth Lakeman as we got there slightly later than expected and we had to get the tent up as well as other priorities :smoke:  I did hear him though and it sounded like a good set to me.

I'll bash some more pictures out tonight :smashin:

Here we go then, some more pictures from festival land!

These are pictures of The Handsome Family, one of my favorite bands and the one I wanted to get some decent shots of. It was very difficult as it was in the tent and the light was poor to say the least. This is where I could have done with a better lens, but, still not too bad I think anyway.

Two comedians, very funny indeed. The guy in the second shot was hilarious

Just before the comedy started there was a warning that the next material will contain blue language and that kids shouldn't really be there. The compare walks on, starts his routine and then three kids, all under 6, walk in and sit down. He really struggled from that point on as he couldn't do his usual heckling with the audience, which seemed to be the basis of his act.

I actually thought that I had left the .exif in the pictures but clearly not

The majority were taken in Av mode with a the widest apeture that the zoom would allow, some of the daylight shots were shot in full manual though. ISO was changed for each situation if I recall correctly.

I'll have a dig about when I get chance and update the picture information.

So, thats the names of bands I need to sort out as well as the .exif, and further sessions of processing and posting. I'm not going to be popular at home!

Some nice pics there Steve, I think the B&W really does it for the first two shots and the border just adds that little extra polish. I really like what you have done with the last one, great idea converting the inner of the archway to B&W.. I wonder how it would look reversed (inner archway colour and the outer B&W) ?

Thanks :smashin: It was a bit of a play in Photoshop after a couple of pints to be honest and I did initially have it B&W on the outside and colour on the inside but I wasn't convinced it looked better. It looked like a large frame.

Looking at the image again, it looks a little light (though it could be my work monitor). The black and white bit had a film grain applied just to try and give it a bit more feel. First time I have really worked with separate layers to be honest so lots to learn yet!

I really like these shots steve, The last one is excellent, But, and don't take this the wrong way, why always with the same borders? you almost think you know what the next shot is going to be, because you see the border before the shot. Of course you don't because the shots are great and always very different. I hope you know what i mean?

 I'm not sure you explained that very well mate.

I decided to use the same border on all my 'for the web' shots so that the border itself didn't become an issue when people look at the image. It annoys me when I see a thread of images that all have different borders as I think they look 'messy'.

Thanks for all the comments :)

Just got back from the Green Man Festival which is actually still on. We came home early after two particularly heavy nights (we must be getting old!)

Not an amazing amount of pictures as the camera stayed in my bag for most of the event (I needed the hands for the beer!) but, some of the best follow. There are more on my Flickr collection.

A typically 'earthy' kind of event. This lady was selling stuff, never found out what, but she smiled nicely :)

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_4754.jpg

Rain was forecast for all weekend, but it held off until this happened!

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_4765.jpg

One of the first artists we saw was a one man band by the name of Philip Roebuck. Amazing ability to play three instruments at once as well as singing. His music had a real nice 'bluegrass' kind of feel to it.

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_4788.jpg

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_4784.jpg

One of the highlights was to see The Aliens, three members formerly of The Beta Band........they rocked the place!

Foxface I have seen before. Very reminisent of the early Handsome Family stuff (not that you know what i'm talking about!)

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_5043.jpg

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_5050.jpg

King Creosote are a great band, they have released 33 albums in all!

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_5089.jpg

http://www.stelor.plus.com/pictures/greenman/IMG_5091.jpg

And, finally, The Green Man festival is popular with bearded peaople for some reason, they even had 'Beard' magazine for sale there. This was one of the most impressive, so I asked to take a portrait........really nice bloke!

"I really like the use of the wide angle on the stage shot"

So do I. Great shot and unusual angle. But how do you get so close?

At Electric Picnic last weekend they nearly stopped me bringing my gear in, managed to get some good shots of PJ Harvey, The Frames and Belle & Sebastian but was a close one. Nipped up to the stage and whipped the camera out each time, was a bit wary of showing it off as I was told "can take it in but leave it in the bag".

Is there any way of getting a photographers pass to events I'm wondering?

Great captions on your earlier shots ("20/40 vision" pic page) by the way

Some pictures from my week away in Cornwall. Lots more pictures in my Flickr set here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/steve_green/sets/72157594276753430/) but here is a small selection.

We stopped in Camelford and spent most of the time just touring round small coves and villages on the coast, there was also a bit of surfing from Lorna (but not from me) and a visit to Padstow (aka Padstein due to the fact that Rick Stein has loads of eateries there).

Thanks. Portmerion was disappointing to be honest. It was smaller than I had remebered and I struggled with the sky blowing out all of the time on my pictures. Much better (and easier) when the sun is out and the sky is blue! (even with metering adjustment)

Hi Steve, love the pictures, brings back some lovly memories of the area, However there is one that confuses me, Moody Sky at Polzeathas at fist glance i thought it was just a lovly depth of field, but then i kinda got concerned looking at the left side, The people look to me to have just been caught in a gust of wind, then viewing the houses, I got worried that they were suffering from subcidence from the floods last yr or was it the yr before. ....

Just having a little fun.

Great Pixs...

Is that the Castle ruins at Tintagel? If it is then, no.

We saw it from the Camelot Hotel which is positioned on the cliff opposite and when we saw it was £4.30 each to get in we kind of thought that it wasn't particularly worth it (we are meanies!) So I just took some pictures of the steps instead

I have been mostly using my 50mm f/1.8 over the last few days but decided today to stick the 10-20mm Sigma on and go and get some images from around Telford. Had a very relaxing bike ride into the town along the 'Silkin Way' which runs not far from our house right into the Town Centre.

I veered off a few times, so probably ended up cycling about 7 miles today, which is great for the soul!

The flower image was taken with the 50mm f/1.8

I've attached a selection of images, the remainder are on my Flickr linked below :)

Stick the camera on a tripod, delay the shutter release and take as many shots as you like making sure the camera does not move in between. Open both the images in photoshop and rag one onto the other creating a new layer then simply use the history brush (or eraser) to delete the parts of the top image where the other subject is standing, flatten the image then save it.........done.

There are some great examples here (http://www.flickr.com/groups/multiples/pool/) :)

Thanks for that steve but what do you mean by"rag one onto the other" not sure how i do that:(

If you're starting relatively simple, and the "two" people aren't interacting, you can do it simply by putting the two images on top of each other. Remember, apart from the postion of people, the two images should be the same.

When they're layered, simply cut around the edge of one of the people, exposing the underneath person.

EDIT: reading that back, it made no sense! sorry!

Decided to venture out with my tripod tonight and get some light trails as it's something I have been meaning to do for a while.

These two were taken on the M54 junction 4 in Telford.

And, one from the ASDA in Telford Town Centre. I was hoping that the store would be busier as I really wanted lot f of people to be blurring in front of the store.....unfortunatley it was very quiet!

http://static.flickr.com/99/262436004_98589bdc73.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/steve_green/262436004/)

All taken with the Sigma 10-20mm lens. Click the images for the link to the flickr photo page where the .exif information is held. All have had an auto levels and a faded sharpen in Photoshop.

I really like the Asda shot - just a shame that you didn't get some cars going past and some people blurred in the shot.. would have really made it.

Nice exposures though

Lovely shots Steve.

I really fancy getting out to do some of these now that I have a camera that will do them.

I might need someone to watch my back though in the middle of Birmingham!

But think of the shot you could get on the Aston Expressway, or even the Spaghetti Junction!

No point doing the M6 though 'cos you would need a 3 hour exposure to see anything moving

But think of the shot you could get on the Aston Expressway

That's where I was thinking of heading in which case I need two people to watch my back, although rather ironically the place I'm thinking off is right next to a big police dispatch unit!

Great pics Steve, very clear. How did you arrive at such long exposures, trial and error or was the camera working it out ?

Bill

Trial and error on full manual. I just started off with a really small aperture of f/20 but that was underexposing quite a bit and as it was quite windy I needed a quicker shutter. Ended up about 13 seconds on f/11. Theywere still a little underexposed but I fixed that in PS via auto levels :)

Personally... and feel free to disregard this, as it is perfectly good as it is..

I think I would prefer to see the horizon line off centre on the first shot.. perhaps with the sky only filling the top third of the frame. This would also allow you to crop in from the left. Which may give a slightly more dynamic composition.

Just a thought.

Good idea. I may well have a play with it in Photoshop to see what I can come up with.

Missed these Steve :suicide:

Love em, the 10-20 gives such dramatic perspective especially where skys are concerned:smashin:

Must say I never have a problem with a horizon being bang smack in the middle of a picture, rule of thirds, surely rules are to be broken

Lorna went out tonight so, some more opportunities for some night time photography.

I was on my way down to Ironbridge to get some shots of the famous bridge there but, noticed a funfair on the way.

Annoyingly, in Ironbridge they have decided not to shine any lights on the bridge at all, so, made my way into Bridgnorth.

Long exposures are all very well, until some blonde in a Clio nearly takes your tripod out whilst trying to park!! I had to move the camera pretty quickly........mid exposure!

There were a few about at the fair, but I didn't fancy staying there too long as there were a lot of 'youths' about......caps and all

Bridgnorth was quiet, there were some folks by the river but I managed to stay away from them, then, when I got in the High Street I just though 'Sod it' and stuck the tripod up on the pavement

I messed about with exposure times and apertures quite a bit. The fourth shot was a 30 second exposure but not many cars went past so not many light trails unfortunately :( ISO was 100 ;)

Do you use MLU or is that not necessary on very long exposures? How exactly does MLU work? My understanding is that you have to press the shutter button once to lock the mirror, and then again for the exposure. When pressing the second time I guess you'd have to first put it on self timer. Will the MLU mode stay in place for subsequent shots until it is de-activated in the menu?

Beautiful looking town there Steve. Funny story about the Clio. At least you got the registration plate if anything did happen ;)

Damn, was about to comment on the reg plate too but banana tiger got there before me.

Excellent photos - particularly like the funfair ones. Now that I have done my water drop picture I now need to try some long exposures but never seem to find anywhere suitable to do them.... there is one place which I think would make a good shot but there is no where to park and the risk of being taken out by someone is probably higher than your clio incident.

I didn't use the mirror lock up facility at all on these shots. The point of the MLU is to reduce vibration so it would be pointless having to press the shutter release to get an exposure as that would cause a vibration in itself. Much better to use a timed or a remote release. It is a feature that I have never used to be honest so I'm not sure about how it works.

Steve, I always like to look over your minimalist shots for tips & inspiration but I also like the others, particularly the St James' Church shot - wonderful tones & lighting :smashin:

Steve its almost become impossible to see any unworthy shots posted by you.. your keeper rate must be high

I cant even accuse you of minimalist only as the last few posts cover a genuinely wide no of genres
Well done ,I find them very entertaining and inspiring ( if not nessesarily always relaxing!):hiya:
