Although they chose to ignore my email asking whether they could match the £189 that some places are now selling the iPod video for (£219 at Advanced).

Those are actually quite cheap, i think i will buy one tonight. Although is it me or is there (once in position) very little difference between a white and black one?

The black one has a black remote, the white one a white remote.
Scan had them on todayonly last week, may feature them again.

Andrew, you seem to have a good knowledge of both the Roku and the SB3
I'm really torn between the Roku M1000 and the SB3, is the SB3 really worth £70 more than the Roku?

In my opinion, the Squeezebox sounds better through the analogue outputs than the Roku, through a dac this is less noticable.
It does have the better features at the moment (BBC radio, pandora, full web control etc.), but I am told Roku do keep improving it.
I see the SB3 as the enthusiasts choice, there is more to mess with, plugins, web skins etc. where as the M1000 is a plug and go system.
I replaced my Roku with an SB2, but at the time there was only a £20 difference in price, however, £70 is quite a gap and it does bring the two a lot closer together.
Have you tried using slimserver on your pc? I would advise you give that a try and see if you like it and like messing with the settings etc.
You could always email stevos and get two for £399 from here:

If you have any questions, just let me know and I'll try and be as unbiased as possible.

I did install Slimserver and it looked quite nice. although i don't think I'd ever use a lot of the functionality (use Sonicstage for music library.
However I currently use TwonkyMedia server with my MP101 and have found it an excellent piece of software, Twonky seem a spot on company and their support is fantastic.
Am I correct in thinking that the M1000 works fine with Twonky?

Yes, I used my M1000 with twonkyvision and it worked fine.
If you have paid for a full version of twonky, and like the functionality, I would probably go for the M1000 myself, purely based on the price difference (you can always buy a DAC with the money saved, my dac-in-the-box was only £25 and made a large improvement)

I currently have the MP101 connected to a Panasonic sc-HT530 all-in-one via analogue as it doesn't have Digital inputs so guess the M1000 would probably be the best bet.
thanks for the honest giudance.
Sorry one last question, dispaly wise would the "large mode" on the M1000 be much bigger than the display on the MP101?
andrew1810

It is larger, but also much easier to read because of the different type of display.
The netgear 101 is good up close, but the font is too small from any decent distance, the Roku and SB3 can be seen from, at a guess, roughly twice the difference (I rarely look at the screen, just use my PDA)

http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/catalog/ - ordered 2 SB'3 on thursday arrived on Fiday, very quick and helpful company, SB3 is very good, have ripped cd's using WM player 10 (WMA Losseless) and EAC (uncompressed WAV).......although can't understand why but the WMA files seem to sound better??, Main system is Marantz PM7001KI Amp, Mission M35i 3 way floor standers with chord cabling....sound is far better than when using the CD Player (Marantz PM7300)......best to upgrade the standard switching power supply....very impressed:clap:

Sort of - the package was listed as a single Squeezebox worth $199 so the VAT was about £28. It took 2 days to arrive. And you get a UK power adapter.

if what I read is correct, you can just place order on web, SB3 will hit your door almost anywhere on the Earth.
by 3/31, you get US$100 off if you order 2.
I already own Onkyo NR900 which can listen to internet radio and music files from PC. not sure if should spend such bucks for this SB3? or get cheaper one, Roku/SoundBridge?

Uridium,
As a Roku - SB3 ditherer, I'd be very interested to know how you get on with the Roku. Is it the best thing since sliced bread? What are the best and worst bits? Any regrets for not getting the SB3?
Cheers,
Noswar

No problem, I've been dithering between the SB3 and the Roku myself for a couple of months. In the end it was all down to price.
It should be here in a couple of days so will let you know how I get on with it.

Look at http://www.multitask-computing.co.uk/catalog/shipping.php
They seem to ship to the EU, though it doesn't mention costs.
Might be worth contacting them if interested.

Had the Roku in for a couple of days now and pretty pleased with it, Display is miles better than my old Netgear MP101 and is super bright, had to turn it down to half.
connected up to my Media library via Windows Media Connect 2 through my belkin router in minutes.
always used Twonky with the NG MP101 but Win media connect works excellent with the Roku.
connected to a Panasonic AIO surround system via RCA and very impressed with the sound quality.
Nice extra is the date and time display when on standby.
About the only niggle I have is with the remote control functions, having to press the "Back key" rather than the up and back arrows keys when navigating back through menus seems slightly awkward but I guess i'll get used to this.
overall for £135 not disapointed

I just finished setting up a Roku M1001 - £135 from easyishop.co.uk with free delivery, (although I went and picked it up from them as they're only a 10 minute drive away). I've no experience of the SB3, but here's my impressions on the Roku:
1. From opening the box to having the whole thing set up, including cabling, finding the wireless router, entering the WEP key, and downloading Windows Media Connect took me about 10 minutes before I was streaming tracks from my library and playing with internet radio stations. This is without doubt the easiest bit of technology I've set up in ages.
2. According to Roku's own website, this runs extremely slowly with my wireless router, a Netgear WGR614 v4. All I can say is "if this is slow, what on EARTH is fast like"?? I have not had to wait at any point for menus to catch up, and there is absolutely no breakup either in streamed tracks or internet live feed.
3. Unfortunately, there is no treble/bass control. Obviously not a problem if you're feeding into a stereo, but as I've gone for the minimalist approach in the bedroom of just the Roku and powered speakers, this would've been nice.
4. Having said that, the sound quality is still great!
5. The display is extremely clear and bright, and the menu system logical to navigate, which combines to make it a doddle to find what you want to listen to.
6. It would've been nice to get Radio 4 for the morning news. I thought I had this cracked when I found a url for the actual live feed (rather than just going through Real Player) which worked on my PC, but sadly no joy on the Roku.
7. It's really easy to get the device to check if it is running the latest software, so at least when, hopefully, they do support BBC stations, it'll be easy to upgrade.
Overall, for what I wanted - a small physical footprint with a huge music choice for the bedroom - I really don't see how the Roku could be improved!
Hope this helps some of the ditherers out there!

Hi,
Now that you've had the Roku for a few days how are you getting on with it?
I'm still dithering... I'm slightly favouring the SB3 because of the reports of better sound quality. I'm not sure it's worth an extra £80 though. If I was going to use it in my living room with my hi-fi seperates I would definately go with the SB3. In this case, it's to connect to my Denon Mini system in the kitchen. Bearing in mind it's a mini system (a nice one at that) and in a kitchen will I be able to hear any difference between the Roku & the SB3? Where would you put the sound quality in comparison to a typical £180 seperates CD Player? I would hate to purchase the Roku and be dissapointed that the sound quality wasn't up there!
Thanks
