Hi, all.

I've just finished watching.

The picture quality is kinda disappointing.
looks very grainy and soft. but no visible EE. :)
The quality of picture makes this movie look kinda old movie. Maybe this is director's intention. but obviously, not my cup of tea.
As far as transfer's concerned, I wouldn't know how well this title's been through telecine process. because I didn't see the movie in cinema.

The spec of the title says DTS 5.1 & DD 5.1.
Actually, this title's supposed to have DTS ES 6.1 Matrix & DD 5.1 EX. (title's not flagged.)
I'd say fairly good, above average sound quality.

I actually enjoyed the story, and found many things to think about in the film.
And seem to have a lot of extras. I normally don't get bothered watching extra stuff, but I think I'll watch DISC #2. :)

Happy HT-ing.

Just watched this too - not at all what I was expecting but quite a unique experience (cant think of any other film quite like it?)
On my 3801 the DTS soundtrack came up as "ES Matrix"
I thought the sound was quite restrained although the few loud bits really did sound fantastic
As mentioned & great package of extras including an interview with Sound Guru Gary Rydstrom which I am looking forward too ...
Paul ;)

Doesn't mean it's flagged.

On my A1SE, I set it to do 6.1 matrix/surround with every 5.1 sources. (except music titles. :) )

Did anyone else think that this film should have ended when he's sat under the water facing the angel? All the thousands of years later stuff didn't really do anything for me... That was the point it turned from a Kubrik movie to a spielberg one in my opinion...

There is a pretty good film in there somewhere. It's just a shame it's surrounded by such boring nonsense, tinged with the Kubrick sedative (zzzzzzZZZZZZ) and concluded with stupid sentimental crap. If this film had been fortunate enough to have nothing at all to do with either Kubrick or Spielberg, it might have ended up being the good film it should have been. Instead it's just a contrived cure for insomnia and a reminder of how much I hate Kubrick films.

Just seen this DVD and I can see what everyone means about the graininess... very noisy picture... the extras are crystal clear, but the quality of the film itself only just managed to remain watchable.

i agree that transfer is quite murkey, certainly not as good as
some oher dvd eg Gladiator, Crouching Tiger and The Matrix etc.
I hope they re-release again on another limited edition!

Do you think the Region 2 will be better?
Maybe R2 owner on this web site might know something we don't!

Hi, Shaz. :)

Transfer-wise, it is very good quality.

The image was soft and grainy on the theatrical prints. This is as SS intended... I think to try and give it a 'dreamlike' quality.

But, again no matter whoever's intention it is, I don't like it. :)

Pointon, i personally i think Kubrick is brilliant (I dont spielberg exactly a bad director either), but i like it when ppl are more than prepared to fly against convention, do you mind if i ask for an elaboration. This is isnt mean to be antagonsitic i would genuinly find it interesting.

I've always found Kubrick's work to be very "deep" and complex.
Kind of like a dream... the way dreams make one feel confused
and suffocated. And then there is a twist and "solution" to the
confusion. I felt this esp with A.I,Eyes Wide Shut and The Shining.
Kubrick's work is deep and takes time to get into.

and concluded with stupid sentimental crap.

I feel if it wasn't for the ending then this film wouldn't have been
the magic it is.

If this film had been fortunate enough to have nothing at all to do with either Kubrick or Spielberg, it might have ended up being the good film it should have been.

It's really hard to get a film just right.
There's only a few movies that come as good as this e.g
Blade Runner, The Matrix and Sixth Sense.
It's not brain numbing with a dead story line like "Hollow Man"
It's not over done with "cheesy" fx like "The Mummy". It's just right.

Instead it's just a contrived cure for insomnia and a reminder of how much I hate Kubrick films.

Well at the end of the day it's just a MODERN fairytale story
and that's it! Nothing more and nothing less.
It's created an awesome ammount of debate. You can check out

Dunna worry, it's a movie with a lot of substance, and I can understand loads of opinion being totally opposite to my own. I just don't like the film, find it boring and a waste of a very good concept.

Never did like any Kubrick stuff at all.... but I can understand other people liking it. The only reason I would buy the DVD is as a cure for my insomnia though. I find it as boring as all Kubrick material, and as sentimental as all Spielberg stuff involving little boys. Sometimes I worry about the guy.

On second thought though - thanks thestorm - I really do like The Shining.

yes! Two hours of brilliance which kinda lost its way at the end. Still a great film though.

The region1 is noisy but I'd have to say it looks like a bad compression job rather than a film artifact.

I'd not seen the film before and wasn't expecting too much but I was pleasantly surprised: its got its problems the sentimentality of the tacked on ending being a major one . Its thought provoking and disturbing like all the best sci-fi: also I suspect it has a certain resonance that is not necesssarily that obvious to people who don't have children.

Its a good film and didn't deserve the savaging some critics gave it.

I have to say that I loved it but I do agree with most comments - that final act definitely lets the film down. It's reviewed on my site HERE (http://www.electronicreality.co.uk/reviewpage.htm), but add my vote to the 'I love A.I' list. Superb :)

I watched it last night and was expecting to be disappointed after what I had read. After watching it I was very pleased that I didn;t bypass it. I thought it was a very involving movie experience, the ending was rather OT, but I can imagine it would have been difficult to finish a movie like this..
Thumbs up from me - however I was a little miffed at some of the picture quality..
