Thanks: Gave 161, Got 56
Tried Vista Beta and now got 2 boot options I no longer want

Needless to say I was curious about the latest beta of Vista, created a 2nd partition, installed vista, that didn't work so deleted partition.

Now everytime i restart I get 2 boot options 1 - XP 2 - Vista it automatically selects vista which throws up an error since i no longer have it.

How do i remove the multi boot option??

This is what boot.ini says

;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=6
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Home Edition" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

would be grateful for any help

Vista doesn't use the old NT boot.ini it use a new Bootloader. This can't be edited manually like boot.ini it has to be done from the command line using BCDEDIT.EXE.

You'll find all the files for this Bootloader in c:\Boot folder.

To remove my unwanted Vista installs in the past I have always done it this way:-

>=Boot into XP and using a partitioning tool or NT disk admin delete the Vista partition.

>=Delete the c:\Boot folder

9 out of 10 times this is enough as once the XP install fails to see the C:\Boot folder it refers back to the default Boot.ini file. (there are no Vista entries in here just a couple of remmed out notes)

If it doesn't work you will need to boot from the XP CD, run the Recovery Console and run FIXMBR and FIXBOOT. You'll need to know the Local admin password for your PC to run the recovery console though.
