Sony RDR HXD-910 Fan Always Running

Chaps,

A mate of mine has bought a Sony RDR HXD-910 and is very pleased with it...except that the cooling fan keeps running all the time.

Is this a known problem with this model?

He's now on his second one, but it's just as bad as the first. Even after being on standby for 12hrs or so, the cooling fan is still running!

Is there some sort of menu option to turn it off?

Any suggestions?

That's what I said - but 2 in a row with the same fault?

Seems unlikely, especially if no-one else has encountered this fault?

Well, not necessarily faulty.

In the words of Basil Fawlty - to risk stating the b......g obvious - the fan will run all the time if the recorder is running hot all the time.

My 710's fan is on much of the time because it sits at the top of a stack of other AV gear and it all tends to get a bit hot. At the bottom of the stack is a Denon Amp which is making a big contribution to global warming all on its own.

Luckily I sit quite a way from the kit and am not aware of it unless I go close.

But I can't think of any reason it should be hot enough to warrant the fan running when it's been in sandby for several hours, can you?

He hasn't got any other AV kit, so it's not in a stack of equipment or anything.

He's going to have a look at it with a temperature probe, to find out how hot the exhaust air is and if there are any "hotspots" around the case.

I've had one for three months - and have NOT had any problems with this at all. Has he got it well ventilated at the rear of the unit - i checked mine after 24hrs solid running and hardly any heat build up at back was observable.

It's a cracking piece of kit and I can't recommend it highly enough - the PQ is just fantastic

mark....

Sorry - thought he meant the fan came on when the box came on after standby. If the fan is running when its in standby its definitely faulty.

Just to clarify, the recorder isn't waiting for a timer recording to start, is it?

My fan runs early in the morning when the machine isn't even on.
I know that is does it from approximately 4am till about 7am,dont know why but it has always done it.
Maybe it is defragmenting the hard disc or something, who knows.
When I am using it with the TV on you can't even hear it running.
Mine 910 is turned on now and the fan is going, the fan on my old Sony GX3 also used to go all the time but again it wasn't audible in normal conditions.

I noticed my 910's fan was on one morning (about 6.30), in standby mode, had me puzzled, I thought it was recording at first 'til I checked it. I haven't noticed it do it since.

I don't think so, and there is air being expelled from the fan.
