Hi all,
I too have a Garmin i3, and I too have an issue with it.
When I originally set it up with the supplied CD, it would not complete the setup properly ('cannot load mapinstall' or something like that). I went to www.pocketgps.co.uk and downloaded the latest software version and all the other bits like POIs and speed cameras. The unit now navigates fine, but it will not show any POIs and more importantly does not detect speed cameras.
Can anyone who has managed to get speed camera alerts on their i3 please enlighten me? Easy please, I am no techie.
Chris Muriel, have you cracked it?

Do you have the POIs switched on?

Settings>Navigation>Proximity Alerts>On

Yes, alerts switched on.

I suspect my problem is to do with loading the data onto the unit, although it did say something like POIs successfully installed.

Thanks for your help though, I have been through all the menu settings, but I may well be overlooking something like that.

BTW, I have tried navigating with and without WAAS enabled, and both seem to work. What is your's set to and what is the difference?
I do like this little unit, but wish it came with a printed manual!

I managed to find a 28 page english manual in PDF format (about 1.3 MegaBytes) - I probably got it from Garmin's website.
My POIs show up fine.
I do recall that any update usually erases all previous data so you have to add any POI lists that you want to keep by including them in the update from your PC each and every time you add anything.

Thanks Chris, that did the trick!
I reinstalled the POIs (.csv files), and it now works perfectly: 'bing bing' when I get within around 300 metres from a speed camera.

I guess the next thing to do is print out that monster manual off the web and see if the proximity warnings are distance adjustable.

For anyone out there looking for a budget Sat Nav, I reckon the i3 is great. I noticed that someone wrote in another thread that it doesn't give voice directions - it certainly does. Another thing people have commented on is the small screen size, but I wouldn't want anything bigger stuck next to the mirror on the windscreen (about 30cm viewing distance), and with voice guidance, you dont even need to watch the screen.

The only thing that annoys me about the i3 is that Garmin don't provide a proper manual, just a quick set up guide. The manual you can download from Garmin's website is for the American product.

Other than that I think it's great - loads of information available on the www.pocketgpsworld.com website.

AFAIK, they can be adjusted if you load them manually instead of the "recommended" auto/fast load, or whatever it's called. Manually, it gives you the option of setting your own distances for each type of alert.

Thanks Kerm. I like the speed cam alerts, but would like to know a little later (to minimise the bongs!) - I'll try this.

Does anyone know if the maps can be updated for free? If so, how?

Re: Plz Help With Garmin Streetpilot I3

Time not being correct is linked to not navigating - it synchs when it locks on to enough satellites.

Try leaving the I3 on, in clear view of the sky (e.g. roof of your car) for a period of time.

Should hopefully clear the problem, and make it start quicker next time.

You could also try a factory reset (while powered up, hold down all 3 buttons on the front of the unit) - HOWEVER, you will lose installed custom POIs by doing this, so will need to reload.

Hope this helps. If you need a new one, I upgraded to Garmin 250 - very similar.
