Anyone got some suggestions for this? needs to work in europe, and a good solid mounting unit would be good. Tomtom riders way to dear for my poor bank account

I have just traded up from tom tom on an ipaq to a garmin 2610
Mounting brackets you can get from ram mount, for more info go to www.bikersoracle.com and search for sat nav ;)

Just bought one of these from Somerfield for £129...would seem to do what you need, bike kit is available seperatly
I also have the Garmin 2610, it is not cheap at £500+ but it is the right kit for the job. It is simply the best bike sat-nav available. I ride with an IAM group. Of the 200 members about 30 have Garmin 2610, a couple have the 2720 which has the euro maps installed on a hard drive (VIBRATION CAN CORRUPT THESE). Nobody uses anything else. I think the Garmin Quest is also up to the job and is cheaper, but nobody I know has one. BMW and Triumph use modified 2610 as their OE sat-nav.
