Sony KDFE42A12U opinion/ prices ?

Hi all,

I've read a lot of enthusiastic comments about the 50" Sony but can't seem to find much out about the 42". Is it just as good a set in a smaller box ?

It seems you all have bigger living rooms and/or more understanding better halves than me !

I've tried to sell her the 50" with all the usual reasons: bigger screen, free stand, better deal etc., but i have to confess I'd be worried too that a 50" screen would take over a 12'x14' living room !

Thanks in advance for any help !

The 42" is an older version mate, and an uglyer version in my eye.

The 50" will seem huge at first, but give it a month and you'll be wishing you saved for a 62"

It will be fine in that sized room.

I agree. When I first told the missus I wanted the 50" sony she freaked but we've had it for just over two weeks and she's fine with it
I'm beginning to think I should have bought something a little bigger. 50" seems massive at first but you do get used to it very quickly. Its an outstanding set for the price as well so I'd say go for the 50" over the 42" everyday

But they look identical except for the size:

Hi, My 50" was delivered yesterday. My living room is slightly smaller than yours and the tv looks fantastic. In fact the room looks bigger as the corner stand pushes right back neatly.

Bit confused now, thought the 42" and 50" were the same internals in a different cabinet

Can anyone comment if the PQ is as good on the 42" as it is on the 50" ?

Any KDFE42 owners out there at all ? Or are you all jammy sods with the bigger version ?!

Thanks to all who've replied !

These TVs are exactly the same; they differ only in size. The 42" is not an older model.

Personally (and I know it's against the grain here), but if you don't want the TV to absolutely dominate your room, I would have thought the 42" version would be great. I've been using a 45" Sagem in my living room (18' x 16' x 10.5'), though I'm changing it for the 50" Sony tomorrow (it's that wretched humming againm, and rainbows). I think I can just about get away with this (hope the other half agrees - haven't actually mentioned it's bigger yet!).

Maybe we'd all have massive screens if we didn't have other halves, but there are other considerations to be made in retaining a domestically acceptable living space. It's your decision...... good luck!

I've got the 42". I only sit approx 6-7 feet away from it, and the 50" was too big. It's exactly the same TV, except in different cabinets (the manual is the same). I can't recommend it enough. Although I still feel i sit perhaps a little too close to it, I find the picture that little bit more impressive about another foot away!

Best advice is to go to a shop and stand/sit the same distance. The 42" looks big enough in my lounge, and as tonyl59 says, I didn't want a TV to dominate the lounge, it has to be lived in too!!

AFAIK the 50" model uses a 3LCD system, whereas the 42" uses a 'plain' LCD system. 3LCD is more high-end and would be a reason for me to go for the 50" even if is is that much bigger.

EDIT: On the dutch site it says 3LCD on the main product page for the 42", but in the technical specs it says 'LCD Rear Projection'. Can anybody shed any light on this?

There's no conflict in that. They are both 3LCD rear projection TV's.

Thanks.

Are there differences in the connections they can handle?

This set almost seems to good to be true; built in digital tuner, HD ready, 3LCD, good contrast/brightness, excellent color reproduction. The 50" seems just a tad too large for our room (4 meter viewing distance) but the 42" would fit the bill perfectly.

As a 42" owner (the telly that is ) i can only say that i love the picture as much as that from the 50". In the shop both sizes were displayed and i couldn't notice any big differences between the both of them. Thought the 42" was slightly more 'color happy' and had a little more black definition, but that could have been just the settings (couldn't fiddle with the remote to check).

But we thought (coming from a 26" tv) the 50" to be a monster in size. Though we do have a large lounge area (20 x 20 ft), we don't want to fill it up with TV. So we went for the 42" and i've used the 200 euro we saved for a new DVD-player with HDMI output.

Reasoning from a technical point of view you could say that they use the same lamp/LCD projector and therefore the 42" should have a little more contrastpower because it displays the same amount of light on a smaller surface. But that's just theory.

I have the 42" version and I love it, and from what I can tell it is exactly the same as the 50" just smaller. And remember a 42" screen is pretty big any way!!
