New Thomson 50DSZ645 DLP from John Lewis - first thoughts and questions

Looking for advice. Just got delivered a Thomson 50DSZ645 50" DLP from John Lewis. Great price, only £1,495 and £39 for the wall mount - this TV was costing nearly £3,000 at one point.

First impressions - how can it work, it is that thin ! It looks great cosmetically and even on it's stand it sits closer to the wall than my current Samsung 43" plasma on it's stand.

This thin-ness is key to my requirements since I have a long but very narrow room with large windows at each end, so I have to view across the narrow side with 7ft to 8ft viewing distance. I really like the Sony 50" 3LCD, but the depth put's it out of the picture, as it were.

Now, here's the rub - the Thomson looks great with some test hidef trailers and good quality recordings from Sky + Just about to check out DVD using component. But compared to Plasma on basic Sky content it is flat, dull and generally lacklustre. I have another Sky + and good 23" LCD in kitchen/family room for daytime/genral use - so my aim in going for the Thomson DLP was for movie viewing predominately for SKY HD (and hidef DVD formats) when they come.

Although my 3-year old Samsung plasma continues to look great and can handle 720p via DVI (tested using a PC), it is not HDCP compatible so I know it will have issues with next gen DVD systems - it refuses to play ball with at least two of the £100 DVD HDMI upscaling DVD players.

Ok, so the 1st gen Sky HD box should allow 720p via component, but seeing the great hidef footage on the Sony 50" 3LCD has got me hooked on a bigger HD screen !

Here is the question - the new Thomson DLP has two picture problems;
- top right hand quarter is out of focus - can see this when I plug in my PC via DVI
- the centre of screen has a slight curve on horizontal lines

None of these I believe are inherent flaws, so I suspect set-up faults. Do I get JL out to fix/replace it, or sent it back and stick with the Samsung ? Wife wants it to go back, I am still debating.

Anyone who has this model - would love to hear your views.

Also in the back of my mind is waiting for the new Sony SRXD models to appear. I have seen the current models in trips to the US and they are trully outstanding, but again depth of cabinet may be the issue. Posts say 30 to 50% less deep than current models, not enough.

This one should suit your room, although it may be a while before we see one in the UK.

PM me to discuss access to service menu please.

I also have a few other questions I'd like to pick your brains on, e.g. wall mounting....

Is that your foot in the botom photo?

I think this set is very astheticly pleasing. But i have not really seen any glowing reviews of it.

Nice set up btw.

Raymen

How easy was it to wall mount ? I have the kit and the instructions, but this unit is extremely heavy for a DLP rear-pro. It is much heavier than my 42" Samssung plasma for example.

From your photo it appears that you have some kind of board or panel fixed to the wall.

Also, have you had any problems with focus, geometry or marks inside the screen ?

Rgds
