Will Lumagen HDP be worthwhile in my case?

I have an Optoma H78 projecting onto a 7.5 ft wide screen. Currently I use an HTPC with ffdshow for watching DVDs. However, my main source is downloaded hidef movies at 1080i, 720p. I also have an XBox 360 connected and am looking to get Sky HD when it is finally released.

Considering my only SD source is DVD which I post process through an HTPC, what visible benefit will I get from a Lumagen HDP on the hidef material from PC, Sky HD and Xbox 360?

Well,

There are those who have moved from HTPC to Lumagen scalers just for SD DVD playback let alone HD. JeffY where are you....

The HDP currently has per pixel motion adaptive de-initerlacing for 1080i HD material. I do not think your PC will have that ability. Today or tomorrow Lumagen stick out the latest firmware with inverse-telecine (film detection/2:3 pulldown) for 1080i film source material. That will result in even better quality than they do currently with their per pixel motion adaptive stuff. The lumagen scaling algorithm is also good at helping to reduce mpeg noise in some material, be it SD or HD. Then you've got the individual colour channel y/c delays and decoder adjsutments coupled with multi-point greyscale to allow you to equalise each source so you get the most accurate playback possible from each.

So in essence. It should make all sources look better.
The H78 can do 48Hz playback as well I believe so you can probably also remove the judder associated with 2:3 frame construction on R1 DVD's .

To Lobo, the easy calibration procedure on the Lumagen is worth it by itself if I have understood it correctly.

To Gordon,

I currently am using a Lumagen HDP. I've used its awesome 11-point grayscale calibration tool to amazing results, in combination with the SpyderTV xyY measurements (I was really surprised by how easy it became).

I have two questions. To calibrate my DVD I turned on the DVD player, turned on the Lumagen on the DVD input, turned on the display and took measurements from the 11 point grayscale tool that shows the 0-100 IRE windows. Is this the correct procedure?

To calibrate Sky+ can I just take measurements on the same windows, only switching to Sky+ input on the Lumagen (with Sky+ on)?

And another one, that I asked here on AVS: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...14#post7025914

Now... is it better to make use of the color isolation feature on the HDP to calibrate the color decoder (adjusting the color and tint values on the scaler) or is it better to use filters and the service menu on the display (a Panasonic TH-50PHD8)?

Or, another option, using the color isolation feature but then regulating via the service menu on the display?

Sorry for the many questions, I just thought you are more likely to visit here than on the AVS forum.

Cheers!
