Interesting read, but although curious, how many of us will be interested in upscaling players - even at 1080p - when the real thing is just round the corner. I'll certainly me sticking with my current hd850 for now

1080p outputs are nothing new, but SACD over HDMI most certainly is! This has been on the cards since HDMI announced version 1.2 of the interface last August, which added DSD amongst other things to it's capabilities.

However, I don't believe any player has used anything other than HDMI V1.0 or V1.1 so far, so I think this new Samsung is the very first with V1.2. It's usually Denon or Pioneer who are the first of the blocks with this sort of thing.

If you want to play an SACD through your AV amp, you currently have to do it via analogue connections, or in a few recent cases, an A&M implementation of IEEE1394 / iLink. Not exactly widespread.

So this is where we are all eventually heading. Does that mean we are close to the end of the road? 'course not! Dolby TrueHD and DTD-HS may be used on BD and HD-DVD, and HDMI V1.3 will be introduced to support them. Along with a whole new round of AV amps and processors.....

Are there many amps with HDMI 1.2 ports to go with the DVD-HD1080?

What's next a little while after amps with hdmi 1.2 capability, hdmi V 1.3 or 1.4 that'll allow 'true' (not upscaled) 1080p to pass through the amp? Am I the only one getting fed up with all this upgrading nonsense?

Its drip fed to force upgrades. Like why has it taken so long for freeview tuners to start appearing in TV sets and DVD recorders. They introduce one part of the technology at a time and full implementation isnt reached till several models down the line forcing regular upgrades
I wouldnt be too fussed about the 1080p output on the Sammy as unless you have a 9"CRT or the latest Sony SXRD then you cant watch it, besides in my experience the Sammys internal video processing is pretty ropy to say the least

This would imply a conspiracy among manufacturers, otherwise why wouldn't one company release a model with everything therefore attracting all the sales?

I don't believe there are any yet, though there surely will be. Only thing is, HDMI V1.2 only gives you DSD (SACD) plus some PC compatibility enhancements, so the incremental market may not be that big. I suspect that many amp makers will just go straight to V1.3 with trueHD etc.

An unspoken agreement I guess from which all benefit but the end consumer.

Because if they sell a model that is more or less future proof, then they wont be selling another box two years down the line. Tag Mclaren tried to make their products future proofed, which they more or less were. For example the AV32R AV processor originaly appeared in 1998 and upgrades were made available so that the latest version which appeared in 2003 still has abilities (such as full room EQ) which only a hand full competators have caught up with. This strategy (although great for the consumer) prooved folly for the company as they went out of business Its much more profitable and less expensive for the manufacturer to come up with a new clean sheet design every year or two and flog another box
