Failed IP address on HomeChoice

We've recently had HomeChoice installed at home (no possibility of sky or ntl) and had the homeplugs installed as well.

Great for connecting one computer, not great when connecting my xbox 360. When the computer is connected, the xbox 360 fails to get an IP address. When the xbox is connected, likewise the computer can't find one!

The homechoice box has two connections at the back one labelled PC and one with Net. I've connected from both ports one at a time, but never together. Have I done something wrong?

If I've missed any details please let me know. It's driving me nuts having to reset the box just to play online!

much appreciated

You are only paying for one IP address. Not sure how homechoice operate but you either install a router which allows the one address to be shared by many other devices like XBox and PC at same time. Uses a thing callled "Network address translation".

If for whatever reason you don't want to buy a router or you can't connect one then Homechoice will probably charge a few quid extra and give you a a few addreses.

I'd certainly go down the router route cos its provides security in the process of doing network translation. If your connected direct to the Internet as I suspect then you PC or Xbox are wide open to nasty hacker people and lets be honnest the operating systems arn't so secure.

The usual suspects make routers and one might think you may even want wireless but then you said your using Homplug which is a wireless alternative.

You might like to think of the router as a 'splitter'. Connect one port to the homechoice box and the other 4 can go to PC's, Xboxes, laptops and so on. If you get wireless then you can even surf the net on the bog or in the garden assuming you have the little receciver (new laptops have em built in).

I've tried putting a router in between the connection and the components (PC and XBOX) but still will only let me use one at a time. Is there a specific router to use, or am I stuck with only on IP address?

Any ways round this?

If you installed a router with NAT enabled then the Homechoice box doesn't have a clue and doesn't need to know what is connected to the router. The Homechoice only see's one device - the router.

The router does the clever bit. If you did what you said I assume its not configured correctly or its wired up wrong. Try a factory re-set of the router and make sure the WAN/Internet port is connected to the Homechoice box and the other ports are connected to your toys.

When you connect a PC, check you get an IP address. Normally something like this 192.168.x.x where x.x can be anything from 1-255.

New problem now!

I've got the router plugged in, the computer works fine, but the xbox is now failing on the DNS stage!

To make matters better, I can't access the router setup screen! Reset again?

Re: Failed IP address on HomeChoice

Jake

What router are you using as homechoice only recomend Netgear WGR614. Have you tried resetting your router. Try plugging your pc back into the homechoice settop box to see if it will connect to the internet. I had homechoice and you should be able to assign your xbox an ip address E.g 192.168.1.2. through the router. If you are not using the router mentioned above it might be worth getting one as i had no problems with it when using it with homechoice it is really easy to use. If your router has a setting allow plug and play you need this to be activated for homechoice to see your xbox

Thanks for your reply, got it all working now, just used a broadband router for the homeplug at my end to split everything up and we've got a wireless router coming out of the homechoice box with a homeplug attached. Seems to work!
