Hi Guys & Gals,
does anyone know where I'd be able to find/search for DVD's which are 720p/1080p, obviously T2: Extreme Edition is a prime example of a 1080p DVD but none of the websites I use to purchase DVD's have the ability in their search options to search for 720p/1080p. I want to make the most of my Sammy LE32R41B & Sammy HD950 via hdmi, so any help would be most appreciated.

Try Amazon.de for HD disks (Tomb Raider, Underworld etc.)

Thanks for that Seth, I noticed it says WMV HD-DVD will that play on my Sammy HD950 or will I need to play the DVD on a PC?

I don't know the Samsung 950 player I'm afraid - so I can't comment (although I didn't think it played HD stuff) - PC would be the way to go I believe, currently.

I'm not in the UK at the mo so I can't check my 950 instruction manual but, I've checked the Sammy website and it says the 950 outputs 720p, 756p & 1080i via hdmi which is how I've got it connected to my tv, although it doesn't say anything about playing wmv.

No such thing as a 720p/1080i DVD that will play in that resolution on a conventional DVD player:lesson: You can only access the HD content on a PC which uses the Windows media format. Conventional DVDs are not capable of carrying HD information that can be played on a conventional player and convetional players are not capable of true HD output. All the samsung will do is read the standard definition info from the disc and scale it to a higher resolution. Only DVHS and HDDVD/Blue-ray are capable of carrying true Hi-Def picture content:smashin:

Cheers for that Thunder, so does that mean that T2: Extreme http://www.playusa.com/DVD/Region_1/3-/116786/-/Product.html isn't 1080p & is the Sammy user manual is lying when it says it outputs 720p/756p/1080i via hdmi or is the 950 just upscaling to those resolutions?

You can only access the HD content on T2 extreme (I own it) on a PC using the Windows media system. The film is mastered from a high def source, but is only SD. All DVDs are standard definition; thats 480 lines for NTSC and 576 lines for PAL. Your Samsung DVD player has a cheap scaler built in, what this does is it takes the 480 lines of information on the disc and using some clever maths boosts the resolution up to 720p effectively guessing the extra information it needs in order to make the picture up from 480 lines to 720 lines. This is scaling and if done well can have excellent results, but the best scaling is usually done in a seperate video processor:thumbsup:

the main feature its "Digitally mastered from a brand-new 1080P, 24 FS high definition digital telecine transfer for superior video and audio quality"
so not hidef.......but the sammy does upscale the images from standard def dvd's
disc 2. the description says it all. ""T2: High-Definition"-The complete theatrical version of the film in Microsoft Windows Media 9 series, playable in high resolution and 5.1 sound directly from your PC"
but how do they squeeze it onto one dvd?

That answers my question cheers Thunder & Beecee. :smashin: So really I should just keep my eye out for reviews of DVD's that have excellent picture quality to get the most out of my current set up & wait for HD DVD to kick off properly?

I have T2:Extreme. They do fit the film on 1 disc (you do have 9GB per side to play with and it all fits on 1 side).
One thing to mention before you start ordering them: When you try and play them, they verify your IP address over the internet, if the address is NOT one to be found in the US, it will not let you play the disc!
There are ways to decode the discs to hard drive first but have yet to get them working (and they are quite convoluted)....currently have T2 and Underworld HD sat here doing nothing......complete waste of money.
If its the future, they can stick it where the sun don't shine.

ps - the WMV-HD discs will not play in a sammy hd950...its merely an upscaling dvd player (not true HD)..... if you buy these discs you need a PC and a monitor or projector capable of handling 720p or 1080i etc....ie the panasonic ae700 for instance.... but beleive me when I say the pictures are truly wonderful and simply give you a flavour of what is to come when high def dvd players finally reach us ;O)

If you really want HD, get a DVHS player and you can have 720p with full bit rate DTS now:)

I have read all the info on that site about switching the WMP dlls etc and have never gotten it to work....plus I have never found a US proxy server that still works....plus I run Windows x64 and it seems none of these dlls will work with it, so I have to buy another copy of windows just to allow me to hack WMP up.....not going to happen.
Will check my Underworld disc tonight, feel kinda stupid as I only opened T2 and after over 2 weeks of trying to watch it, gave up and threw both my HD disks to the back of my DVD collection in disgust.

via the very high compression wmv hd codec. mpeg 2 was the compression algorithm used for dvds, there are much more advanced compression algorithms now, and wmv hd dvd is one of them.
i have t2 extreme also and altho i cant afford sonys new sxrd 1920x1080 projector, it indeed does looks GREAT on my WUXGA 1920x1200 dell 2405 fpw monitor.
Enjoy!
