Quick question about trinitron screens

I am considering buying some speakers to use with my TV. Someone told me that because I have a Sony Trinitron Wega TV, the speakers do not need to be shielded due to the way these sets are designed. This doesn't sound right to me, can anyone confirm if this is indeed the case?

hi paul ,when i replaced my tv with a sony trinitron wega we placed it in position and proceeded to play around with the settings ,the picture was slightly left side biased ,tried to centre it ,no joy ! oh no faulty set ! then i noticed my surround sound speaker on the left side was close to the tv ,moved it away ,hey presto ! solved the problem .just don't place any speakers too close to any crt set ,i'd heard that these tvs are lead lined or screened in some way to stop interference ? that would certainly explain the huge weight !!!! maybe someone else can shed some light on this subject

unsheilded speakers will pull out the picture like any other crt tv.

I also have a sony and i have had to place my speakers (floor standers) about 2 feet away. to clear colour patch problems.

Thanks for the replies.

I thought what he was saying was wrong, and you have confirmed it.

Has to a a LCD, Plasma, LCD RP or DLP RP (in other words, anything except CRT) to be immune to magnetism.

The only major difference between the Sonys and other crts is that the former has 1 large electron gun and others have 3.

All crts operate by producing a beam of electrons and moving the beam to direct it at a phosphor on the inside of the screen.

Since electrons are negatively charged, any magnetic source will alter their motion towards the screen, giving peculiar display patterns.

Sony use magnets around the neck of the tube to correct alignment of the beam, purity magnets etc.

Found this about Trinitrons:

"It's sort of a hybrid between one gun and three guns. It has 3 cathodes, 3 G1's and 3 G2's, but only one focus grid and one accelerating grid. The idea of the single large focus grid is that it will allow for sharper focus compared to an inline gun of equal quality. The electrostatic horizontal convergence is the only way to straghten out the beams after they cross in the focus grid. They do require convergence, but were much simpler to converge than delta gun CRTs. "
