How to switch a Sanyo 21MT4 on without a remote?

I recently found a discarded Sanyo 21MT4 tv and took it home on the off chance it worked. It worked fine the first time i put it on, apart from a slightly loose SCART connection, which was easy to work around. But then the next day when i switched the tv on it went to standby and stayed there. I do not have the original remote.
This model of tv doesn't seem to have any hidden manual buttons on the tv to change channel, volume etc (I tried the three at the front, but nothing)
I purchased a One For All universal remote, thinking that perhaps using a remote signal could get it past the standby mode, but this has not worked either.
So, I'm just wondering whether there's anything else I can do. If I took the back off the tv would any repairs/adjustments be within the capacity of a complete novice like me?
Or should I just re-discard the tv, and buy a new one, like the rest of the population?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Adrian.

Maybe there was a good reason it was discarded?
