How about the new Pioneer 1080p (PRO-FHD1 50" plasma) to go with the player. A snip at £6500 from AVLand.

Perhaps in a year or two ;)

It's nice to see the high def bandwagon finally rolling. However I have a feeling that HD-DVD will steal an early march on blueray. Especially when hardware prices are 60% cheaper. The new Tosh high-def player will start at $499, significantly cheaper than blueray.

Why on earth is blu-ray so expensive? I mean the drive itself can't account for the difference in price and the other components must be pretty similar in a blu-ray or hd-dvd player. Recouping R&D costs perhaps?

Hello all

Expect to see the 1080P Pioneer Display in the UK as early as June/July 05 - its an 'Industrial' Display Product and no mention so far of a 'Consumer' XDE style equivalent.

Pioneer have also launched an Industrial BD Recorder.

Best regards

Joe

PS zAndy1 don't go into manufacturing - if you don't recoup the millions of Yen invested in R&D how would your company function :)

It's probably a flagship model. Enticing everybody over to blu-ray. Showing how it really outshines SD DVD.

Getting things into perspective I do not think that is too bad concidering the 989 costs £800-900

Hello all

I doubt a BD player is going to incorporate anything other than HDMI or DVI (with HDCP) for High Definition playback.

Analogue Component, SCART, S-Video and Composite connectors may be included for non up-scaled SD playback but most likely not offer you High Definition playback from the majority of BD discs.

Best regards

Joe

Yes - I was amazed by the price.

Yes - I was amazed by the price.Pure speculation on AVlands part. What they've probably done is just take the expected US price and converted it to GBP. As we all know it's never that simple and we in the UK usually pay a lot more than are US friends. I expect the price to be much higher if it does hit our shores.

The rumour is September for offcial release for HD-DVD in the UK.

Casting my mind back to 1997/8 this seems about right i.e. a 6 month delay over the US and Japan. However it maybe worth waiting as they can at least iron out any problems with the hardware.

Probably - but then they are part of Pioneer's "The Works" scheme so they presumably get some info.

Yeah, see the Toshiba HD-DVD PR disaster at CES 2005.

As Neilmcl says, AVLand are just sussing out the demand for Blue-Ray/HD. It's a pure guess and an invite to show interest in the player. If there's pre-orders for 1000+ players - UP goes the price. If there's naff all real interest from Joe Public(wary of the standards battle?), well, it'll make it fun watching the Blue Ray/ HD-DVD play-offs.
Ultimately, the price will be what the market will accept/pay for. A fine example being the Canon 5D digital SLR camera. Came out less than 4 months ago at £2550, now going for £1850. Early Adopters? Mugs game.;)

From what I understand it may not be coming to the UK. Pioneer will probably release the second generation model here instead.

If you're desperate to get hold of one then it may be worth checking out Movietyme because they have had the Region A Pioneer on their website priced at £1000.
