Will This System Run Vista?

Hello

I am thinking of buying a new PC but I don’t know if it will run Windows Vista

Here are the main specs for the PC I’m thinking of buying

AMD Athlon 64 bit X2 4800
4GB DDR400 RAM
300GB Hard Drive with a 16MB cache
256MB NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GTX PCI Express Graphics Card
600W PSU

The only problem I am having is that the system specs for Vista aren’t really out yet but I’m hearing reports of 2GB of RAM and that Vista will take more from your GPU than your CPU so you will need a pretty high-end graphics card for the new user interface

I have also read that the X2 4800 out-performs the 3.8GHz P4 but I don’t want to get this system only to find that when Vista comes out that it wont run it, but I need the PC now and I don’t really want to spend money on one that I wont be using for long because I will probably upgrade to Vista when it comes out, anyway any help would be helpful

Thank you

If that doesn't run Vista (when it finally gets released) then the only people upgrading the OS on their PC's will be NASA

(currently have a recent Vista beta bulld running on an old IBM Thinkpad R32 laptop (P4 1.6, 256 mb ram and Intel integrated graphics!)

Hi

Thank you both for your reply to my question

I will hopefully be ordering the PC later this week with Windows XP home (I decided that there was no point in getting pro or MCE because I'll be putting Vista on it later in the year anyway) but thank you both again for your fast replys

Thank you

Hello

Microsoft is keeping pretty quiet about the system specs for Vista but most (if not all) mostly new PCs (say the ones bought in the last 4 or 5 years) should be able to run it, but it may not be able to run the new UI (user interface)

To run Vista you will need at least 512MB DDR RAM but I have heard that they do recommend about 2GB

Here are the lists of CPUs that will be able to run Vista

Intel CPU's

The Intel site which has the CPUs that it supports is quite complicated so just say a CPU bought from Intel in the last 3 or 4 years should be fine, but here is the link to the site if you would like to look for yourself Intel's Vista CPU List

AMD Desktop CPU's (my future choice)

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX Processor
AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor
AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor
AMD Sempron™ Processor

AMD Mobile CPU's

AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile Technology
Mobile AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor
Mobile AMD Sempron™ Processor

Windows vista will now take more from your GPU (your graphics card) than other windows OS’s did and this is because if the new UI (user interface)
The new UI is mean to incorporate new glass effects on title bars and also animated windows when you minimise and maximize them, but also desktop icons are meant to be animated as well so when you empty the recycle bin then it will play a little animation of that happening but most (if not all) is powered from your GPU

Your graphics card will need something called WDDM to be able to have the new UI but only recent graphics have this, here is the list of ATI and NVIDIA cards that have this and that already have a driver for Vista ready on their sites for download for Beta 1 testers

ATI Desktop GPU’s

All-In-Wonder® X600 Series
All-In-Wonder® X800 Series
All-In-Wonder® 2006 Edition
All-In-Wonder® 9600 Series
All-In-Wonder® 9800 Series
Radeon® Xpress 200
Radeon® Xpress 200 CrossFire™
Radeon® X300 Series
Radeon® X550 Series
Radeon® X600 Series
Radeon® X700 Series
Radeon® X800 Series
Radeon® X850 Series
Radeon® 9500 Series
Radeon® 9550 Series
Radeon® 9600 Series
Radeon® 9800 Series

ATI Mobility GPU’s

Radeon® Xpress 200M
Mobility™ Radeon® X300 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® X600 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® X700 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® X800 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® X800 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® 9500 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® 9600 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® 9700 Series
Mobility™ Radeon® 9800 Series
Mobility™ FireGL V5000 Series
Mobility™ FireGL V3100 Series
Mobility™ FireGL V3200 Series
Mobility™ FireGL T2-128 Series
Mobility™ FireGL 9000 Series
Mobility™ FireGL 7800 Series

NVIDIA Desktop GPU’s(again my future choice)

GeForce 7800 GTX GPUs
GeForce 7800 GT GPUs
GeForce 6800 GPUs
GeForce 6600 GPUs
GeForce 6500 GPUs
GeForce 6200 GPUs
GeForce 6100/6150 GPUs
GeForce FX 5900 GPUs
GeForce FX 5700 GPUs
GeForce FX 5600 GPUs
GeForce FX 5500 GPUs
GeForce FX 5200 GPUs
GeForce PCX GPUs

NVIDIA Mobility GPU’s

GeForce Go 7800 GPUs
GeForce Go 7600 GPUs
GeForce Go 7400 GPUs
GeForce Go 7300 GPUs
GeForce Go 6800 GPUs
GeForce Go 6600 GPUs
GeForce Go 6400 GPUs
GeForce Go 6200 GPUs
GeForce FX Go5700 GPUs
GeForce FX Go5650 GPUs
GeForce FX Go5600 GPUs
GeForce FX Go5200 GPUs
GeForce FX Go5100 GPUs

These at the moment are the GPU’s that have WDDM and should be able to support the new Vista UI but don’t worry if you haven’t got a graphics card with WDDM, I have heard reports from Microsoft that on install Vista will scan your system and if you can’t run the new UI Vista will still install but you will just have a UI of XP

At the moment that is all I know about the system specs for Vista gathered from a number of sites but hopefully they will give out more info in the summer but if they want people to upgrade then I don’t think that they will set the specs too high anyway

I hope this helps you
