Not all Denon DVD players are really made by Denon...

ince 2004, Denon has outsourced some of its DVD players. It is now time for me to reveal this out. This is a secret DVD player production info not revealed by Denon:

http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t285372.html

The current Denon DVD player models (DVD-556S, DVD-756S, DVD-1720, DVD-1920, DVD-2910, DVD-3910, DVD-5910, DVM-715S, DVM-1815, and DVM-2815) are not all made by Denon. The Denon DVD-556S, DVD-756S, DVD-1720, DVD-1920, DVM-715S, DVM-1815, and DVM-2815 are being made and assembled by Funai for Denon, built to Denon's specifications. Only the Denon DVD-2910, DVD-3910, and DVD-5910 are made by Denon.

If you have never heard of Funai before, this is the company that currently produces products under the low-cost Emerson, Funai, some Insignia, Sylvania, SV2000, and Symphonic brands. Funal also manufactures DVD players, DVD recorders, DVD/VCR combos, and VCRs for Magnavox, Philips, Mitsubishi, Sanyo, and Sharp. Funai also manufactures printers for Lexmark and digital cameras for Kodak.

the point is you pay the premium price for a supposed premium product made by Denon

does this apply to the amps/receivers as well??

Hmm... The source of the news had his last thread (amongst others!) closed at AVS.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...+made+by+denon

Do a search on his posts at AVS, most of the threads were closed.

But that isn't a point though...I thought it was common knowledge manufacturers subcontract...in fact there's only a handful of companies in the world that make most chips as everyone else sub-contracts their designs to them, the clever stuff is the engineerng to get them chips up to manufacture.

Most of Bang and olufsen Plasma's for instance are really re-branded Panasonic screen with better properitatry components (a B&O service engineer told me this).

Seriously, don't worry about it mate!

As long as the end product is if good build quality etc. then I don't see the problem. After all, I haven't heard anyone saying Denon's quality has dropped.

I would argue that the subcontracted models are not Denons premium products, and I am sure they would agree.

I am presently waiting for a 'typically British product' lovingly assembled by craftsmen in Yorkshire. The 3 months delay in delivery is due to production difficulties with the electronic components subcontarcted to a Chinese firm. While this news is a little disturbing, what would be more disturbing is the difference in cost to the final product if the electronics were also made in the UK. We are all part of a global economy, and where something is built matters less and less as we evolve.

Actually, for those car manufacturers all they do is assemble bits made for them by other companies. The shock at Denon not making the units is daft - do you expect them to manufacture the processors, wiring, transformers etc themselves? All manufacturing is these days is glorified assembly at the top of the tree.

if i remember rightly, a large portion of the worlds single purpose processors are built in a few plants in scotland........and if im still remembering rightly, its because of the local air pressure level being right to allow a much higher rate of perfect chips.....anywhere else and they would need to create that pressure level which wouldnt be so cheap........

obviously not Pentiums and Athlons, but some used in Hifi/AV stuff, others used in Studio equipment.......

if i wasnt so drunk i'd remember who it was that made the things..lol, they are a listed company in the shares index...thats one thing i can remember..heh

So I'm not the only person who contributes while drunk! I find drink improves the qualities of forthrightness and honesty in my posting. It also tends to make me right more often, even if my reasoning powers to back up assertions are reduced.
We should start a 'Forum of Inebriated Clarity' with a minimum 4 pints/glasses/shots entry qualification. I'm not quite sure what it would achieve, but it would be fun to read the following day. More fun than this thread anyway.
