Toshiba SED article
I am trying to decide on what LCD to get.....now THIS sounds exactly what I am looking for .....but I just have to go and rob a bank and I'll be sorted!!
Obviously I am still going to go for an LCD, because I am sure the ££ will be too expensive initially, and I don't want to wait another year. But they do sound impressive, and just what I am looking for in an LCD

Dear Toshiba,
Please make a 32" and 37" SED TV.
Yours sincerely,
Prof.

I agree. It would seem foolish of Toshiba not to make smaller screens available. Mass production, or not, will not lower the price of a 50+" screen to a suitable level for the vast majority of the home TV market, for quite a few years.

I doubt they will make smaller screen sizes at the start as these set are going to come in at a premium, regardless of the hype that toshiba give about competitive pricing. The main demographic being able to pay that premium are also the same people who will require a larger screen size, so it makes financial sense for toshiba to launch with 55" and above sets. They'll probably release the smaller sets once SED gets established and the price becomes competitive with equivalent plasmas.

Am I right in thinking SEDs are cheaper to manufacture and produce than LCDs so after a couple of years they should be the same if not cheaper than current LCDs?

For that to happen we need competition. As long as there is only one manufacturer making these panels, and if they turn out to be as good as early reports suggest then Toshiba will feel no enclination to lower its prices. The good thing is though that this new (superior? we will see...) technology will spur the other manufacturers on to make even better Plasma and LCD panels.....

I thought Canon were the major player in SED technology at the moment?

You would hope so, given fair market competition. However I'm guessing SED is patented so far up the ying-yang that one or 2 companies can tie up the market and charge whatever they like, or create a false market by having lots of brands.

SED is a Toshiba/Canon joint project.

another 32/37/42" vote from me, I just can't fit in a 55", unless I rebuild the house.
Hmmm

55" Cinemascope
Here's a thought, how about a 55" 2.35:1 ratio screen?
Not so silly as it sounds - great for cinemascope movies but wide enough to support side-by-side TV pictures of a useful size or TV plus PC or... you get the idea. You could keep a constant picture height regardless of aspect ratio and who cares if there are dead areas to the sides, they would be jet black.
I'd buy one

1 vote for a 26" or 28". I'll pick it up next week!

I'll trade in my DLP when I can get a 60+ inch SED for £2000.
I'm hoping to do that in 2007!
