Got this in my email. Might be of some interest to someone:

The Recordable DVD Council, set up two years ago
to help promote recordable DVD, has announced a
new standard that it hopes will help ease consumer
confusion regarding recordable DVD, and help
manufacturers to market their products more
easily. Dubbed DVD-Multi, the standard includes
the write-once DVD-R and rewritable DVD-RAM and
DVD-RW formats, which the Recordable DVD Council
claims offer the best compatibility with existing
DVD players. Manufacturers that make a DVD
recorder that supports these three formats will
be able to market their products as a DVD-Multi
product, which is hoped will help make life
easier for consumers and boost the acceptance of
recordable DVD.

Well there ya go.

Hi

Yes the DVD Multi logo is a good step in the right direction. It is rumoured that Hitachi will be releasing a DVD Multi recordable PC Drive that will allow you to write to DVD-RAM, DVD-R and DVD-RW. Then set-top recorders following that will record to all.

I see people using the more expensive DVD-RAM in their video machines as it is longer lasting (100,000 rewrites) and allows for chasing record like TiVo. Also it can come in a caddie (like mini-disc) so is more robust. So DVD-RAM will be the equivalent to your high-grade video tape. DVD-RW will be cheaper as it is rated for 1000 rewrites and currently doesn't allow for chasing record functions, so equivalent to your standard grade video tape. Then DVD-R is your cheapest one that allows you to write just once and will used to send video to friends.

Of course the difference between these and video tapes is the quality is the same on all.

However things are not as clear cut as they seem as we still have the DVD+RW (and if it ever happens DVD+R) formats created by Sony and Philips to name a few.

Philip
