AVR 2106 "learning remote"

Having just set up my new AVR 2106 I now trying to configure the remote to operate my Sony RDR-GX7 DVD recorder.

None of the preset codes supplied seem to work for this model, however the instruction manual (which I note has been the subject of some less than complimentry remarks lately!) states, on page 31, that "The remote control unit can be used to operate components of other manufacturers without using the learning function......".

I can't find any other reference to this learning function in the manual. Is this a misprint or is the operation of the learning function missing from the manual (or have I missed something!).
