BG808 Resolution & Rates
Hi There,
Running a BG808 via a HTPC and i've been playing with them and resolutions and refresh rates.
The HTPC is massivly overspec, though i kept fairly simple with the GFX card as i've heard that some of the new models comming up will be HDTV compatible in hardware, so i went for a cheap Saphire 256meg X1300, so still not so shabby.
From specs the BG808, does 75Hz Horizonal, 140Hz Vertical and 1600 x 1200 res. I've spec'd this via powerstrip along with a -ve HV sync. I'm running a VGA -> 5 BNC RGBHV into port 5/95.
Playing with powerstrip and the ATI control centre i can get a nice pic on monitor and projector with overlays on both (its only 7 or so years back from when i wanted to do that with a very early first gen dual head card!).
I can get 1024 x 768 @ 60hz and 1280 x 720 @ 60hz and so far have run at the 1280 x 720 as its 16:9 as is my 101" screen.
However last night i was fiddling and trying all sorts of res's and refresh rates and found that the Barco seemed to lock at 60/61Hz and roll at 30/32Hz and ocaisonaly go black, even though i thought the signal i was sending it was anywhere between 59-110.
Am i missing something ???
Also what would people recomend....its a while since i was that gen'd up on whats 'good'.
Thanks,
Lee

My mate has his data 808 set at 1280 x 720 @ 72hz/75hz for nearly two years now, setup was by Roland Brooks, looks excellent too. no stuttering during pans neither as the 3:2 pulldown has been removed for 24fps material, ie NTSC.
Hope this helps

Theres the usual mutter about making sure your sync is negative.
Not sure what you meant by lock at 60Hz and roll and 30Hz.
16:9 1280x720 @72/75 is a good choice. Flicker free, doesn't push the bandwidth, cleanly resolved, and good for 3:3 pulldown at 24 and 25 fps. 60Hz is annoyingly jerky.

Hi there,
lock at 60Hz and roll and 30Hz.
The display in the bottom right hand corner, in delightful Barco Green says 60Hz and i have a nice picture. If it says 30-32 Hz i get a fast rolling picture, like a knackered TV set that the Vertical Hold has gone on.
When you say 72/75Hz that is in Windows, as well as what the Barco read out gives (switches on/off with the text button on the remote) ???
I also have some funcky extron thingy in a case somewhere that i bought off here a long while back on a whim...is it worth using / playing with that as well ???
Ta,
Lee

Well, I guess if it's locking to 60Hz and saying 60Hz then it's locking to 60Hz. If it's rolling and saying 30Hz then it isn't locking, even though 60Hz sync pulses are still being thrown at it. The 801s has a vertical hold pot that can be tweaked. Don't know about the 808.
If you feed it a refresh rate of 72 or 75 Hz, then it should display it in the text info. I found XGA at 75 Hz a good easily set up res for SDTV.

I'm quite happy with 1440x960@60Hz for NTSC and 1440x1152@50Hz for PAL myself. On BG808s I usuually run everything at 1920x1080p with very satisfactory results. I don't know what it is but even though the picture is overlapping it looks the best to me.
I was amazed at a BD808 I setup yesterday at this to have visible scanlines from 4 meters away at 960p and 1152p. That machine is the sharpest thing I've ever seen.
Petty I sold it the same day though.

Alaric - I'm somewhat closer than Sweden. the Extron may help to condition sync pulses and I've something similar for Barcos.
(P.S. Anyone know what Warn(0%) box, box, box means under your user name????)

Hi There,
Mr King - Wrong Post...but your talking about res's and BG808's...how is that wrong...mind you it does sound a little high.
Barcoing - Sweeden ??? I'm confused ! I may try the Extron over the weekend. Its a RGB 202 Plus, and has a load of cables, including a couple of buffers, giving dual outputs, so i can run three with the graphics cards dual outputs. One for the PJ, one for set-up and one for outside in the refreshment area.
I've never noticed the Warning thingy, but it looks like something for traders. Ie when a mod warns you for selling off thread or you do a bad deal maybe. I'm a good boy (or haven't commited the cardinal sin of getting caught ) so no warnings
Cya,
Lee

if you can stand some minor flickering i found 1920x960@47.952hz and 1920x864@50.000hz best for my bg808s. the picture has much more snap and crispness compared to 72hz and 75hz with the responding resolutions.
1920x1080@50hz/48hz/60hz also looks great, but i think the sweetspot with my barco lies more near 960p with around 50hz...

You can find my evil twin on the UK crt map, nicely centred on a piece of swamp, the implication being that I can walk to Huntingdon in a few days.
48Hz/50Hz flickers too much for me.
