Recording dvds

Recording from dvds, not on to blank dvds.

My friend is able to play a dvd, put a vhs tape in and press record and it, well, records.

I have tried this with my set up, but no joy. I can't tune the dvd signal into the video - i don't think anyway.

The tv is Philips 28PW6305 and dvd player is Harman/Kardon 10.

Friends set up is just a tv/vcr combo, is this the answer?

they sell a gadget to connect between DVD and Video that stop the macro working i used something very similar years ago to copy Video to video.

This is called macrovision.

It is a way of scrambling the signal from a dvd if connected to a vcr, hence stopping you from copying the dvd to vcr. You could get your dvd player "chipped" so it can turn the "macrovision" off, and let you record.
