Active or Passive sub..?

I have an old Sony all-in-one system and am currently changing to a seperates system.
My question is about the Sub. It seems that a few Receivers out there do not connect to a passive sub, only an active one.
Excuse my ignorance but what is the difference and what would my all-in-one system use...?

Active sub has it's own in-built amplifier, whereas passive has to be powered from the main reciever/amp. I think a lot of cheap all-in-one systems use passive subs. Active is most desirable because of the extra power needed for the large driver excursions when producing low frequencies.

I have the old Sony DAVS800 and I believe it uses an active sub. Not 100% sure though. How do I tell..?
A link to the system is here => http://www.cinenow.com/us/materiel.php3/tid,7/id,3

Does your sub have its own seperate power cable that plugs into the mains? If so then it is active. If not and the only connection to it is some speaker cable from your main unit then it is a passive design with the subs amplification housed in the main unit of your system. My DAVS 550 has a passive sub connected by speaker cable to the main unit.

No separate power cable so looks as though it's passive. Anyone know of any cheapish (£250) amps that will handle a passive sub or do I need to do some sub purchasing...?
