Connection Woes (Newbie Non techie!)

I have a Wharfdale 17" freeview LCD TV and a standalone VCR and seperate DVD player. I have hooked them up in the bedroom but cannot record freeview on my VCR. I have connected as follows. Aerial into TV (as the Freeview is part of the set. Scart from DVD into AV1 on TV. Scart from VCR (AV1 IN/OUT) to AV2 on TV, there is another scart on the VCR labelled AV2 IN. I can play Videos and DVDs but cannot seem to record from the TV. My setup downstairs is the same but through a Freeview STB so this is 'looped' through the VCR to the TV but the Wharfedale doesn't have a RF Out socket. Sorry if my explanation isn't very good but I am not very technical on these matters. Also due to space restrictions I am thinking of buying a couple of Scart ribbon cables, are they any good or are round ones better and can round ones be purchased in 0.5m (or shorter) lengths?

Cheers

John

If you can watch freeview channels then the freeview part must be working. If you can't record it then the problem must be either the connection between the TV and VCR or the TV or VCR itself.
The connection on the VCR sounds fine, but is the scart socket you are using on the TV an output? If it is then is there anything in the menus that can turn it off?

An update. I can record freeview by selecting AV1 as the channel on the VCR, BUT no matter what freeview channel I select BBC1 is recorded!!

Any ideas anyone?

Further update. By 'playing about' I have now got the VCR to record any freeview channel. I put VCR into AV2 on TV and set this scart output to digital, and put DVD into AV1. My problem now is I can only record a programme if the TV is left fully on. I would have thought Standby would be enough, but if put on standby the tape is recorded blank. Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

I'm guessing that having the tv on standby means the freeview decoder is on standby too and as such it won't be outputting anything to your VCR.

I would have thought there would a way around this for TVs with integrated freeview but I've only ever used STBs which always need to be left 'fully on' to allow recording on a VCR.
