Help!! Bi-amping using Denon AVC A11XV

Hi

I have just taken possession of the Denon AVC A11XV and have a question regarding bi-amping.

Have front main, center, sub, surr b and surr back connected with the surr a terminals free. Can I use the surr a terminal to bi-amp the fronts and run all the amps together.

The manual seems to suggest that you can only use surr a and b seperately unless you are using 1 in a seperate zone.

Also I have an old Rotel power amp sitting around how might I use this to aid me to bi-amp the front speakers.

Thanks in advance.

Hi

You can't do what you want as Surround A and Surround B share the same Amplification. The Amp only has 7 Channels and you're already using all of them.

To Bi-Amp the Fronts you'll have to drop back to a 5.1 system and re-assign the Surround Back Amps to the Front.

On the Denon it is possible to setup a 9.1 system by having Surround A and Surround B speakers active, but as I mentioned earlier, they share the same Amplifiers. It's really used when you have two sets of Surround speakers so you can switch between something like Dipoles for Movies and Monopoles for Music.

Another alternative would be to use your Rotel to power a pair of the Surrounds thereby freeing up a pair of the Denons Amps so you can Bi-Amp the Fronts.

I wouldn't use your Rotel and the Denon to Bi-Amp a pair of speakers as they're not matching Amps. You really need identical ones or you could end up with volume mismatching between the tweeter and drivers. You'd be better off using the Denon's Amps to Bi-Amp and have the Rotel just directly run a pair of the Surrounds.

So I should use the Denon front and surround back terminals to biamp my fronts and use the Rotel to power the surround backs.

One more stupid question if I do this the surround back speakers cable goes from speakers to rotel power amp then Rotel power amp out to Denon what??

The Denon has a few options on how you assign the Amps so it will be worth experimenting to see which one is best. With the Rotel you would connect the Surround Back speakers to it and then connect to the Denon's Pre-Outs for the Surround Backs. The only thing that might scupper this is if the Denon cuts the output to the Surround Back Pre-Outs if you re-assign the internal amps. You'd need to check this.
