Question aspect ratio

Hi everybody , I am looking for some help with aspect ratio setting, I have a DVE dvd with 1:33 and 1:78 ratio test screens but would also like to set a 4:3 aspect screen can anyone reccomend any other discs with test pictures also I find it really hard to focus the blue tube or should I say trust my eyes with the test pattern ,I have noticed a blue stretch mode in the pjs settings but cannot see any noticable change with this set on or off.
Many thanks Tony

Hi Tony,

1.333:1 is the same as 4:3 because 4/3=1.333 recurring. Not sure what the blue stretch thing is. Your eyes do find it more difficult to focus on the blue also the blue beam focus is often under or overfocussed to give a bigger dot size in turn exciting more phosphor and boosting the blue output which is typically less than red and green due to the type of phosphor. Think this also helps the greyscale tracking in particular the whites.

See this link for a detailed guide on focussing issues:

Hope this helps.

Blue stretch is meant to help boost the blue output. You'd probably need some light measurement gear to see the difference though.

Try tweaking the electronic focus to give the dimmest blue image (sharpest) then focus the lens. Then return the electronic focus to its previous setting.

There's a few other tricks some of us installers use to boost blue output without causing blue fringing, but they're trade sectrets

Ahh...Mr Frost! Trade secrets hey? Mmmm.... wonder what they could be...have to get thinking!

Yes was wondering how to get round this blue fringing issue. When I did mine I set for sharpest blue beam focus and then did G2 afterwards instead of softenning the focus on blue. What differences will there be between this and using a more softly focussed beam. Shouldn't the G2 be able to compensate if you're gonna go for sharp focus on blue?

Barcos have an enhanced blue setting - or green as it's known outside Holland.
