I have 3 questions about this...
1. Does this mean that with the HDMI lead, the picture he is seeing is not upscalled?
2. Will he notice a better picture using the component out?
3. Why do Samsung advertise this player as an "upscaling DVD player" when it will aparently only upscale using a cable that is not supplied??
Can you clear this up for me please???
Thanks,

Just to butress the above reply:
1. The player via HDMI lead can ( in the 950) output RGB, RGB expand( whatever that means) or Progressive Scan( Pal and NTSC) 576p to your displays native resolution ( ie no upscaling). It can upscale the progressive scan output to 720 p or 1080i via the HDMI lead ( if you ask it to

) but not via the analogue component leads (unless you hack it to remove HDCP via a simple remote hack which also makes it region free)
2.Yes it will, compared to RBG or s-video, More difficult to say comparing component via the hdmi lead, and with component via analogue leads . I certainly found the PQ via HDMI with or without upscaling better than RGB Scart or s-video but Im yet to compare with component via analogue . Absolute PQ is also display dependent.
3.Samsung do supply an HDMI cable with the 850 and in addition, an HDMI -DVI cable with the 950. However they are perfectly entitled to call the player upscaling even if the leads are not supplied as they may want to leave choice ( and length ) of cable to you and not supply a cheapie freebee not meeting your specific requirment. I dont know any other DVD manufacturer which actually gives these cables away. I use the one supplied ( with the Samsung)and am unable to say it is of poor quality as I like the PQ I get thru it.
