denon 1920 best set up

finally upacked my 1920 and looking for some set up advice

i plan the following

hdmi to hdmi dvd to pv 500 plasma
opitocal sound to amp

so what should i change from the defaults to get the best performance, theres lots of things in the menus i don,t understand and dont want to bugger it up

also other pv500 owners is it better to let the player scale the pic 720p/1080i or set it at 576 and let the panel scale it

any advice would be great

It's hard to bugger up anything properly as you can always turn the settings back. The Denons have User memories (Picture Adjust on the remote).in which you store your picture adjustments. Selecting Standard puts you back to the factory default. Resist the urge to turn on 'Enhanced black' in the Setup menu.

Compare the scaling abilities of the player and the display and let your eyes decide. The 1920 has a Faroudja DCDi deinterlacer/scaler which is a quality item so it's worth trying it out.

Get yourself a copy of Digital Video Essentials as all adjustments are a bit subjective without decent reference material.

That's not possible to do with this player as it does not scale up to the panel's native resolution, therefore all images will be passing through the panel's own scaler anyway.

A lot of people forget this and assume that just because a player has a scaler it will give an increase in quality. This is only the case if:

A: The scaler being used externally from the panel, whether it be a scaler built into the player or a dedicated scaler such as the iScan VP30, is better than the scaler built into the display panel.

B: The scaler being used externally from the panel can scale to the exact native reolsution of the display panel, which for plasma dispplays is quite often 1024x768 or 128-x768. Neither of these resolutions corresponds to the 1280x720 or 1920x1080 which are output by upscaling players. These resolutions are useful for products such as projectors which do have a native resolution which matches the upscaled output of these player but again only when situation 'A' is also in effect.

If you want ot bypass the scaler on the plasma panel you need to feed them an image which matches the native resolution of the panel precisely, this can really only be done by dedicated external scalers such as the new iScan VP30 mentioned earlier and other similar products. It is also worth noting that even doing this does not guarantee the bypassing of a panels own video processing and some models such as the new Pioneer 436XDE make it very difficult to avoid. As for the Panasonic panel you own, I have no direct experience of it so I cannot commnent on whether it's scaler can be bypassed at all. As for scalers, I doubt whether most consumers of a £250 DVD player would be happy forking out for a £1300 scaler either.

Hey Pontyone how are you getting on with your DENON DVD Player and PV500? I am thinking of replacing our Toshiba SD220E with a Denon 1920 for our PV500, but wonder if the difference in quality (via HDMI instead of RGB scart) will be noticeable. The Toshiba is 2-3 years old and cost about £130 at the time, the picture is very good but would like a better black performance although I realise this will depend more on the PV500. Any comments?

Cheers Rooster-X

Hi, I changed my Pioneer DV-717 for an 1920 to go with my 42PV500. The picture quality via HDMI is better than the 717 via RGB scart. However if the 1920 didn't play DVA-A and SACD I probably wouldn't have bothered as the PQ alone didn't justify it. The Pioneer 717 was a very good player (at £500) and I coud not comment on your Toshiba to whether it is worth it. I suggest if you can demo it, that is what I did. Took my 717 to a speacilist and compared. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, guess I'll have to go and demo for myself
