s-video or bust...?

This thing called Christmas has drained my funds for a new DVD player so need to know what's best to do...!
I am running my TV digi-box via a JS Tech RGB to component into a Panny PW7, which is fine BUT my old Sony DVD player has no component out. Having no money left for the new player till the end of Jan, shall I just run s-video from the Sony and let my Yamaha amp up-convert, or spend 40 quid on something like a Panny S29 which does have direct component out?
I suppose the question is, will the PQ be very much better from a 'cheap' DVD with direct component out than s-video thro' the amp, which I suppose I could put up with for a few months and over Xmas. Just don't want anyone coming round wanting to watch a film and thinking the picture's crap!

Thanks all...

I wouldn't worry too much if I were you mate - you could run composite and mono and I doubt that you would get complaints. For most people, as long as a pictuer is on the screen, it is fine. If they see 'snow', bad banding or the sound is low, then compaints will be fothcoming. I say stick with the Sony - the guests should be grateful that you are entertaining them at all with a film !

Mind you, the Panasonic will play more formats (including DVD-RAM) so if you invisage your mates bringing round their own recordings over Crimbo then the Panny is cool.

Have a great one-

Ian

Thanks Ian....
If they are coming round to mine, it's MY selection they'll be watching they can leave their ol' rubbish at home! So not so fused about DVD-RAM...
I think I will just get a good s-video and live with that for a bit.... cheers.

SVideo is pretty good anyway. Much better than composite, and not a lot worse than RGB. Stick with it.

I suppose I could always swap over the scart from the digi-box to the JS Box to one from the DVD to the JS box whenever I wanted to watch a movie....pain but may give better PQ than the pure s-video?

I have my DVD player connection via S-Video and don't notice any difference between that and RGB. Stick with what you have and if your guests start whinging, kick them out

Simon James

Set your DVD player to Output RGB on SCART - now plug the SCART Out of the DVD player to the VCR SCART In on the Digibox.

Now when you put the Digibox in 'Standby' the RGB signal from the DVD will be delivered to the RGB2YUV converter and you have the best image available from your DVD's.

Best regards

Joe

Joe...of course! That's the answer Hell! I should have thought of that
So the signal from the DVD will just pass thro' the digi box to the JS box, thro' the amp and on to the Panny via component? Brilliant. Cancel s-video lead trip....
