un needed processes in windows + broadband help

is there any way to tell what processes if any are not needed from the list that comes up with ctrl, alt and del? i presume ipod service isnt needed or will it stop itunes working.
also how do i stop these starting on startup.
does anyone know what the programme is called that monitors your broadband useage. i saw it mentioned a while ago but cant find the thread.

Some can be prevented from starting up here;

Start,Run, type MSCONFIG and hit OK. Select the Startup tab.
You can un-select all but then you will find stuff like Antivirus and graphics cards GUI's dont run up.

Google for what is needed and what not. Using XPMCE or regular XP?

'Services' can be Disabled in Control Panel, Admin Tools, Services. Be very careful what you do!

If by monitor you mean record your upload/download then try dumeter

im using normal xp.

yes just want to record downloads as ive got a monthly limit

there are dozens of services running in XP that are not required normally...

too many to list in fact.... you can find a good description of all windows services here..
