Great new digital CRT - but why are some graphics fuzzy?

Just had my Panny TX28DTM1 IDTV from John Lewis. £329 with free 5 year parts and labour guarantee and free delivery - can't go wrong!

TV is great, but I guess it takes a bit of getting used to this widescreen malarky after 16 years staring at a 21" std screen! Unfortunaltely, I need a new aerial to get Freeview, so having to make do with analogue channels till Tuesday.

However, I have one initial gripe, and that is that on some graphics with lots of text, the text is not pin sharp - its fuzzy, almost like the words are slightly out of focus. Some graphics are fine, it seems to be only those which are part of a live "broadcast" are affected (e.g. Final Score results prog on Grandstand). Graphics on documentaries and films seem OK.

I am hoping that next weeks aerial upgrade might solve it (I have already tweaked the settings in the Picture settings menu).

Anyone had a similar problem?

Sounds a bit like a blown up analogue signal vs over sharpening - digital will be better

Ditto here. Got ours from Comet as John Lewis were out of stock I'm wondering what to do with it at the mo, as if there's any hint of a problem with it I'm considering getting Comet to pick it back up, get a refund, and get the same model from John Lewis. Other than that, I'm very pleased. Next step is to try and pick up DTTV from the Wrekin, as the Long Mountain (our local TX) won't broadcast DTTV until 2008 at the earliest.

I would check that your Freeview is set to RGB and not composite

He can't do that. It's built-in...an IDTV.

to "the-gog"......

I wouldn't assume that buying the same TV from someone else will solve this problem. The problem could have of a number of causes some of which may be nothing to do with the TV.

I have tried watching the TV using instead the digital tuner in my Panny DVD (which is set to RGB on AV1) and its no better. Nor has my new wideband roof aerial made any difference.

The fuzzy text problem is a bit annoying - its acceptable on most things but on others it is poor. I noticed tonight that the score "banner" on the BBC1 snooker and also the players names on the team formation graphic on MOTD was very fuzzy tonight. Its one of those problems that isn't that serious, but at the same time you can't stop noticing it.

I will live with it over Xmas, but may ask John Lewis to come and have a look at it after then.

What area are you in? I am in Wolverhampton and tuned to The Wrekin, but some say I would be better with the aerial facing Sutton Coldfield transmitter.

If it occurs when the text is very bright, try reducing your brightness/contrast settings. It could be white blooming - you are over-driving the tube.

I did reduce the brightness but it made little difference. Sometimes it doesn't happen when the overall picture is quite bright, which is pretty confusing. It's not that much of a nuisance, it's just that the 1995-vintage Nokia it replaced was absolutely top notch for focus, geometry, and colour.

I know that, it's just that I'd have preferred that the thing came from John Lewis and not Comet, ergo if it blew up on us/developed a terminal fault pretty soon, we'd just be asking for our money back rather than a new set.

Mid-Wales. We can only get Long Mountain, though some houses around us do have rather large aerials facing towards The Wrekin, even though it's out of line-of-sight. I'm toying with installing a log-periodic to pick up The Wrekin.
