Component Video and the TOSH 36ZP48

I have a Toshiba 36ZP48 and I am very happy with it. I only run my DVD player in RGB SCART as this is all it will do. I am contemplating getting a player with Component outputs... I see from the reviews that it really makes a difference to picture quality, is this really the case, has anyone tried a 36ZP48 in Component mode in progressive scan?

Will this solve my problem of different border sizes in PAL and NTSC mode? Is component video always NTSC or does format type no longer apply?

Help appreciated.

Marcus.

Component is only a signal type and therefore it doesnt effect wether the resolution is as per PAL or NTSC

I do not have the same TV set as you so cannot comment on specifically what improvements you can expect from switching to component from rgb

I have the 32 inch version of your tosh and use component video for DVD and coax digital for audio. I upgraded to component DVD player from an old player which I connected via scart. I must admit, I have never tried my new player with scart to make a direct comparison, but the picture I get now with component video and prog scan is outstanding!

I do sometimes get lip sync issue - but this may be to do with the player rather than the TV?

Hope this helps.

erm this seems similar to my experience with the 36ZP38, the component picture is great but on the only PAL DVD I have tried the lip-sync is awfull, the picture via RGB is quite a lot worse than component so could do with a solution....any ideas??

(BTW, I'm running a pioneer 565 multiregion DVD player in "auto" mode (viz a viz PAL vs NTSC) and also using the TV's onboard decoder for digital audio .... so the wife/kids can just turn the TV on and put a disc in without worrying about separate amps and changing any settings..... )

I have the 36zp and the component progessive is the way to go for DVD, great picture indeed! I've never played an NTSC disc on it, but I'll see if I can dig out an old one and see if there are any probs. I've never noticed any sync probs, but then my DVD player runs right to the av amp, and I dont use the tv speakers.

I haven't noticed any sync issues and NTSC discs play fine - there is a setting on my dvd player to choose between PAL and NTSC, and that may have helped avoid any problems.

The RGB scart gives nearly as good a picture, except for commercial DVD(9) films.

I noticed a big improvement in RGB picture quality changing the scart from a cheap £2 lead to an Ixos scart (£11.95) - definitely worth upgrading to a decent scart if you're using a cheap one currently and are unhappy with the RGB picture.

Hi guys

I have a 36ZP48 and previously ran a Panasonic DVD player with RGB Scart, and then non progressive component.

Just a couple of weeks ago I bought a Toshiba SD-150E DVD player (only £45!) that has progressive component and the picture is fantastic - a big improvement. No lip sync issues either, but I use the analogue audio connected to the TV.

Go for it!

Yeah, can't stress this enough. If you have a top of the range CRT its pretty pointless if you don't invest in some good cables.

I may take things to a bit of an extreme, but all my scart cables cost between 30-50quid, and my componet cable was about 40quid as well.

Don't cut corners, it makes a big difference!

thanks guys - I've got a decent thor scart (the £18 play.com one) but the lip-sync problem seems to vary from disc to disc. The Pio player is a real nightmare to change to and from component as you lose picture, also if you set it up in NTSC mode to play component it is fine then put in a R2 disc it seems to play fine via RGB, but this somehow resets the machine and the next R1 NTSC disc will give no picture at all....rather odd.
I may buy another DVD player - any suggestions for one about £200 mark?? - would be nice to have one that can utilise my R1 DVD-A and SACD collection to the best effect....
