Front speaker sizes

I'm trying to find a suitable replacement for the front component speakers in my doors, unfortunately it's turning out to not be entirely simple due to one big question...

Are the 16cm, 16.5cm, 17cm drivers available actually all the same size?

In a nutshell No.

Every 16cm speaker will fit in a 16 cm hole obviously but the catch is most speakers have different depths. I have had to build mounting collars for a few because the magnets were snaging electric window mechanisims etc.

Thanks for the reply.

That's really bad news then and seems completely daft. The reason I asked is because if we were still using imperial then 6.5" would be the standard so I was just wondering if people were using different ways of measuring the same thing.

I was hoping that I could use these:
http://thebassbin.co.uk/shop/product...ts_id/542.html
for mounting these:
http://www.canton.de/index.php?pg_id=26,30,qs2.160

Looks like I might be in luck.

I think your best off getting the mounting collars and then with those fitted you can work out what depth of speaker you can go for you should be alright tho with most components in a Vauxhall as they have good clearance in the door pods

They should fit as Hornydragon has them fitted into his Astra which has smaller door panels.

The big thing for me at the moment is whether to do it myself or not. I'm sure I could get it all in and make it work but I'd like to not break too many bits of the door panels and retain my rattle-free Vauxhall.

I understand your dilemma. Do you have a Haynes manual? if not get one that will give you a step by step guide to removing door panels the trick is not to lose any of the plastic panel clips usually there are two parts, one attached to the door and one attached to the door panel. In my experience the rattles start when these go missing or are not repositioned correctly. Decision is yours at the end of the day I learnt through trial and error and errors are always inevitable for novices.

I recently started driving again so my interest in ICE has been rekindled and I am thinking of a suitable ICE project for my car. (Not planning on buying anything If your reading SWMBO) Anyway good luck

your problem is a common one. You should also worry about the depth of the speaker too. What car do you have and how much do think you would be spending.

if we are talking Astra then 165 will fit but you may need a "spacer" its a ring 6" in dia whicch your speaker sits in thus eliminating the depth problem too.

Get them from here instead...http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSea...=CP02794&N=411 £10 odd including the vat.
Search on the manufacturers part number - SAK-2902 you will find it's the same part but much cheaper.

Or if you want i can send you a template for making your own from mdf.

Thanks for the comments guys, it's a '99 Vectra so I don't expect space to be a problem and was expecting to need an adaptor plate. I was hoping to find a cheaper one than BassBin supply but would very much appreciate a template as I work with some carpenters who could probable make me some in a few minutes out of scraps.

It's looking like I can mount these speakers in the front spaces (I know my Vectra has space for an additional mid-range driver but 3 way systems seem far too expensive[/i]) so I just need to decide on a sensible place to put a cheap amp. There's loads of space behind the glovebox, would hiding it there be a potential problem?

I removed the orginal vectra speaker its "bolted/glued) on to the ring. Remove speaker ( one you remove the speaker it will make it useless) and then glue/moulld you speaker to the ring. This will

A: keep costs to a minimum

B: look ok too. You can use silicone sealant to " seal" the speak to the panel and this will also assist in soundproofing you unit too.

I was wondering about putting an amp in behind the glovebox - there's loads of room back there.
