Vonage- am i paying for something i could get for free?

I've been signed up with vonage since they came out in the UK but there seems to be a huge variety of options available now and I'm wondering if vonage is still my best bet?

They gave me a free pre-configured linksys router and i simply plugged my cordless in and i was good to go.

So...heres what I'm paying for...

9.99 per month for unlimited landline uk calls.
2.99 for a virtual US number so people in NY can call me as if its local.

The virtual number is great but i guess i could live without it if needs be. I also travel a bit so use my laptop when i'm away but all the providers i've seen provide the software so thats not so much of a problem.

oh..and the web interface is cool as it allows redirect to my office when i'm at work.

So am I paying too much?

Yes, you are paying much.

If you can get a PAP2 Linksys from Comet for 19.99pounds and unlock it, or you can buy the unlock version for about 42-44pounds & you register to sipgate & sipdiscount, you can make/receive FREE phone calls to serveral countries. Please check www.sipdiscount.com for the list of FREE countries.

It means you don't have to pay monthly line rental.

www.sipgate.co.uk will provide you a FREE geographical landline phone numbers (i.e. starting with 01, 02).

www.stanaphone.com will provide you a landline US number.

If you would like a hardware which can forward/re-direct, pls have a look at the Sipura SPA-3000.

Cheers!

sipura 3000 is a little hard to be config, but when it's done, you'll be very happy using its functions

Voipcheap.co.uk is causing a few ruptions across Voip providers across the UK. Free calls across the UK and really great prices to call worldwide. Give it a try-its free to download!

I've found the VoIPCheap quality has gone down over the last few months, has anyone else had the same experience?

Well my wife has been on the phone for about 2 hours to her brother in Finland using Voipcheap so the only complaint here is from her husband who hasn't had any dinner yet..!

PC to PC I think Skype is far superior quality wise, but for free calls with occasional hicups you can't beat Voipcheap. My phone bills have dropped from £70 a month to £18.
