Internet connection prob
Hi All
Just got the Artisan, nice looking heavy piece of kit. Can't connect to the internet with my NTL broadband service. All the lights are flashing on the modem, and I'm using the Ethernet connection on the back of the machine. NTL support basically said if get the internet browser up it should be connected due to the Ethernet, but it aint, and then they say that NTL don't support Winows XP MCE. Can anyone help please.
Dave.

I don't know much about MCE, but have recently been working with networking in XP, so here are a few suggestions.
In the XP interface (not MCE) go to Start > Connect To > Show All Connections
You should see your LAN Ethernet interface listed there. Is it enabled? If not, right-click and enable, then test.
If it still doesn't work, right-click LAN Ethernet interface, properties, click on the name 'Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), properties, choose 'Obtain an IP address automatically' and 'Obtain DNS server address automatically', OK, OK. Wait a minute and try again.
If still no joy, right-click LAN Ethernet connection and select 'Repair'.
If all that hasn't worked, open IE, Tools > Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings, select (or deselect if already selected) 'Automatically detect settings'.
Let us know how you get on.

still no joy m8, I assume that windows xp i/f is just when the m/c boots up and the windows page ? and LAN is local area connection ? anyhow tried all you suggested made sure local area connection was enabled - no joy. Checked the box Internet Protocol and clicked properties etc and tested - no joy. Tried the repair and got a message ''Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action could not be completed. Repairing your IP address. For assistance contact the person who manages your network.''
I do not wish to network the m/c at this stage.
Hope this means something ?

You mention a modem; how are you physically connecting the MCE PC to it - directly or through a router?

So your MCE PC is plugged in to the cable modem directly?
Anyway, I have one final suggestion left:
Right click on Local Area Connection, properties. Select 'Use the following IP address:'
Insert:
IP address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: (This may be in your modem manual. Maybe 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1)
Under DNS server addresses, insert the details supplied by NTL if you have them. If not, leave them blank.
I'm afraid if that doesn't work, I'm right out of ideas.

Hope they're of help. My brother and I are on the verge of ordering one ourselves actually (the special PC Pro review model). Would be interested to know how you get on with support.

briles, if you've got this machine up and running, then try copying the IP configuration exactly from this machine..
open a DOS prompt ( start > Run > command > OK )
type the following (exactly) ipconfig /all
hit enteryou should see a load of IP info, IP address, subnet mask, Gateway address, etc etc... note down this information and copy the exact same settings onto the new PC as Mrdavo described above..
Also, on the new PC make sure in the web-browser options>connection settings, it is set to Local Area network and not dialup modem or anything else..

Morning Guys
Have changed the settings to match the old PC, the one big difference is the DHCP Server Enabled on old PC .....Yes, and on Artisan .....No, could this be my problem ?

This would be because the old PC is set to obtain it's IP address automatically where as you're typing these details in yourself for the MCE PC (DHCP servers, in this case your modem, automatically assign IP addresses). Set it back to 'Obtain IP address automatically' and see if DHCP is then enabled when you ipconfig /all from the MCE PC.
I take it things still aren't working even though you've copied the details from your old PC?
