Converter from Avi to Mpeg4

Hi
most of my movies I play on my media center are avi's, anyone now the best way / software to convert these to MPEG4 files?
Looking for an easy and cheap way to convert so i can play them on my Archos and psp.
By the way does media center play mpeg4?
