Unhappy TV too bright, solutions needed!!

Okay this is odd, my Phillips 9308 is now giving me blacks which I can only describe as LCD bright and not the same jet black it gave in the past.

Is this a sign of a failing tube or has anyone got any suggestions?

PS: Obviously setting brightness doesn't help, at 0 the screen is still bright.

I love my PixelPlus....

Cheers for the reply unfortunately you are echoing my concerns. I've owned this set for pretty much 2 years no after buying refurbished so I guess it's had a good knock. The picture is still... well it's fantastic. I've yet to find someone who isn't impressed by a DVD playing on my HTPC and considering the extortionate prices of PP Philips LCDs a premature death couldn't have come at a worse time.

I might grab a 9309 to tie me over for a few hundred quid. I really thought my next room purchase would be something more significant and was hoping this set would survive for a few months still. I guess I can live with the brightness but I can actually see horizontal lines across the image when upclose which is definitely something newso things look particularly bad..

May not be such a big problem: get an engineer to look at the set. It sounds as if the screen/cutoff/g2 voltage is wrong. This may only be a resistor or at worst the flyback transformer.

no idea about tube technology but shouldnt it diminish in brightness as the tube gets older?

Not necessarily: the screen voltage is used to 'cut-off' the electron beam. This effectively sets the level of minimum illumination whereas the 'contrast' or 'drive' of the picture is determined by the beam current. For this reason (if you've ever looked in a TVs service mode) you have both 'low light' and 'high light' settings.

The screen voltage usually comes from a winding in the flyback transformer, so ageing in the transformer or associated resistors, the pot that sets the screen voltage or dry joints on any of the connections could cause the cutoff voltage to rise. This would also account for the flyback lines, which should normally be 'cut off'.

It could still be the picture tube but I think one of the above is much more likely. Get an engineer to check however as there are lethal voltages around the picture tube.

from my expairance i have found it to be the tube but yea it can just be the cut off problem or like someone eles mentioned ' the flyback transformer ' its a right kick in the teath is that goes wrong thats one of the most important pieces in the chassis, a bad cap or a dry joint can be fixed but when that transformer goes bust its gonna be a bi*** to get fixed best of luck thou
