Making my own power cable
Hi all,
I'm interested in making my own power cable. It's really hard to find anything about power cables on the Internet. I'm a begginer at electronics, so I thought it couldn't get much simpler than a power cable, a good place to start.
So basically in a power cable, you have three copper wires, covered in PVC or something similar to protect them.
Could anyone tell me what factors in a power cable benefit the sound?

Getting the right wire on the right pin will certainly help the sound quality
On a serious note shielding theoretically should help

Go and have a look around the cables and interconnects section...there's a lot of stuff there relating to DIY cables, which should help you.
Start with this...
DIY Mains Cables

I put this one together on the weekend. £5/mtr of screened cable & Chinese Wattgate copy US and IEC plug £15 the pair delivered from Hong Kong - only bought them because I thought the lead would look good as I'm getting a US phono amp with a top mounted mains socket - how shallow is that
Try www.the-missing-link.net for good quality DIY bits

Counterfeit Wattgates from China, what is the forum coming to
They do look similar to the real thing though, and no doubt the ebay cable sellers are using them !

Hello Tom,
If you are a beginner with DIY cables, maybe best to start with audio interconnects, then progress to mains cables ! Might be safer Mains has a nasty bite !

In my experience, lots of earthed shielding and tightly twisted cores with as short a lay length as possible (within reason though, too much twisting causes other problems for long cables....)
SY and CY are popular DIY cables, but only partially screened, about 65-75% coverage braid.
CY and SY sellers never quote the coverage of the braid, because 65% is nothing to shout about !
Hope that helps !
Mark.

Honest and frank as always!
At least they don't say Wattgate on them or even claim to be and although I feel the quality is OK, they are not in the same class as wattgates.

Thanks for all the info guys!
Maybe interconnectors are the place to start.
Also, Mark, thanks for the cable, I went home last weekend to set it up and try it out and it sounds good! :D
