xbox 360 and this panny. True HD or not?
720p, 1080i blergh my eyes are going bonkers of reading so much (conflicting) stuff. All i want to know is one simple answer to this questions. (kneeling on the floor head in hands).
Will the panny TH42PV500 work true HD with my xbox 360 through the component connection??
Sorry for being thick.
All help is well appreciated

Err - the 42PV500 is an HD Ready display, and will support 1080/60i and 720/60p inputs via analogue component.
It will scale this a bit, and is slightly lower than 1280x720 resolution, but it should be fine. (I think the panel is 1024x768 16:9 non-square pixel based?)
The Xbox should look very nice via this route - though as with all games consoles connected to plasmas - beware of screen burn.

I dont know your TV's specs, but simply put, a true HD panel needs to support:
Either of these resolutions: 1280X720p OR 1920X1080i/p
And have at least: One or more Component and HDCP enabled HDMI/DVI-D inputs.
That really is as simple as HD can be put.
Now if anyone has trouble understanding 2 sets of numbers and 2 types of conections, then they really need to go back to school.

To clarify. You will not get a 1:1 pixel to pixel match via component HD, as the image will be scaled. However you will get a significantly better picture than SD.

Whilst the XBox supports 1024x768 via VGA, I think this is "square pixel" VGA - so would be a 4:3 output resolution. You'd therefore get a stretched image in this mode - and it would be scaled by the XBox (as I think this is fixed at a single resolution and scales for output?)

Funny enough Im going through this exact process at the moment.
I purchased a panasonic TX26lxd52
for specs see website http://shop.panasonic.co.uk/invt/tx26lxd52
and I too got a 360 on launch day.. Currently they are connected via component and the xbox is running at 1080i settings.
The clarity is stunning but I was trying to work out if there is a better way to connect these two things?

The connection is fine. Have you tried running the 360 at 720p (instead of 1080i)? The bigger number of the 1080i resolution may sound better, but remember that the games were most likely written for 720p resolution and the use of native prog scan may give smoother motion handling.

My PV500 works just fine with the 360, I use 720p as there is little point in doing 1080i.

The picture quality on my 32LXD52 Panny was awesome on either 720p or 1080i in the Xbox dash board, pity the disc drive dosen't work, replacment coming this week hopefully.

Just to throw my tuppence into the ring...
The PV500 is HD compliant over component, like most plasmas I believe it uses a 4:3 stretched ratio , but still complies with the 720 line EICTA guidelines which don't actually demand a true 16:9 ratio of this figure, presumably as almost no Plasma screens would be HD ready.
The 360 outputs a true 1280X720 16:9 GHD signal over component ( the best match of your screen)
So yes that is HD, and having compared it to LCD's (Samsung Acer and LG) and a few LCD front PJ's) I would say that the shape of the pixels is not losing you any amount of discerneble quality, so don't worry!
Sadly none of the downlable HD clips over the xbox marketplace are terribly good examples of 720p IMHO, but having viewed a few clips via my media center to the 360....mmmmmm
