Sony DAV-SR1 - will it go well with a HTPC and projector?

The Sony DAV-SR1 sounds like it will be good enough for a reasonable sized room. If I buy one, it will be take optical audio from the HTPC.

Would this work okay in general operation? I cannot think it would not, but then as the DVD part of the DAV-SR1 is not being used (therefore, no picture), will it be a pain to change settings?

Would it be wiser to buy an amp and speakers, instead of trying to use an all-in-one DVD surround system with a HTPC and projector.
