Advice on a 2.1 system

Due to the fact I have wooden floors and I don't want to take up boards and skirting for cabling to rear surrounds, I've decided to look at a 2.1 system rather than the full 5.1. I've had a look at some of the new virtual surround systems like the Denon S101, Sony DAV-X1, Yamaha YSP-800 but they are all very proprietary so don't give you the option of changing/upgrading components such as speakers and subs, except for the Yamaha. This may not be a bad thing but I would prefer a separate component system.

I was considering taking a 5.1 system like the Denon DHT500SD or the new DHT1356 and just using the front speakers and sub instead. Can this be done with a system like this and is it advisable. Also if just using the front speakers for a 2.1 setup would I still use the centre speaker?

All advice would be appreciated as well as any other recommendations regarding makes and models.

Get a good 2.1 amp, and then buy some speakers to match. I would suggest seperates instead of the all in ones.

Alternatively, you could do the 5.1 setup for future expandability. Some of them have settings so you can play them as 2.1s exclusively.

The ADV-550SD from Denon seems like the setup you are after. Seperates with the option of 2.1
