Advice for "thicky"

Easy one first! I am brand spanking new to all of this and hav'nt got much of a clue. Can anyone please, amongst all you experts, briefly tap out a sequence to tell me how, to copy my homemade VHS tapes from a Panasonic Video Recorder to my newly acquired and "mind-blowingly-complicated" Panasonic EH 60 DVD-Recorder. It is all connected satisfactorily.(not by me !)
Living in hope! Cheers guys(or gals) " beanyboy"

Have a quick look at this thread to see if that gives you a bit of an idea.

It is a simple as this.

1 Select the input on the EH60 that your VCR is connected to, using the up/down channel buttons. It will be either AV2, AV3 or AV4 depending on your configuration.
2 Press record on the EH60.
3 Press play on your VCR.

That will get your recordings to the hard disk... but what is your intended destination? Do you ultimately want these recordings on DVD Disks?

Is it normal for VHS to DVD/HDD copying for the picture to be unstable?

I have tried copying (home recorded material - not copyright) and the picture is not the best in the world.

I have a scart cable between the two machines; would putting on a good quality cable help?

What kind of Unstable do you mean? Are you recording at a decent enough quality? Is the picture stable when you monitor it when recording?

No - A 'good quality' cable would only help if there was something actually wrong with your existing cable.

What kind of linkage are you using to transfer ? Composite? S-Video? RGB?

Sorry for delay in responding - i've been away.

The picture quality changes from being reasonably good to poor ie it breaks up a little or "wobbles" and then goes back to good again over, say, a 5 second period.

It is almost as if something is not quite in sync and it changes as it cycles through the in sync out of sync if that makes sense.

The picture from the VHS seems normal reasonable quality when you view it directly.

In terms of good enough quality I have tried it at SP mode on the Sony 710 which I believe is better than VHS anyway.

I believe my VHS only has composite (Scart or phono). I am using a scart at present.

I intend to carry out some more testing this weekend.

Graham

PS Sorry for highjacking the thread!!
