BluRay/HD-DVD... already under threat?

Interesting reading.

http://biz.gamedaily.com/features.as...=11193&filter=

Holographic disks are one of these things that has been "a few years away" for about 20 years now, but it looks as if this time it could be for real - production by the end of 2006? We'll see. I've read about this in a few places now.

Question is - the technology being there is one thing, but will the vested interests of the electronics manufacturers and Hollywood studios do their best to crush it through ignoring it because of the threat it presents to their new babies?

I mentioned this about a week ago Here. It does sound as if Blu-Ray & HD-DVD could be old hat before they have even reached the UK, but as you say it could be scuppered by the film companies. But 200Gb on a single disc could be invaluable for backing up a PC etc now that HDD's are getting so big.

Mark.

as it seems the music indusrty is waking up to the idea of legal downloading as the only way to end piracey, no doubt hollywood will follow suit once it sees how that pans out. perhaps this is where the future really lies.

theres a few articules around suggesting this, so its not a personall thought.

The new media you guys mention sounds nice though, as long as its do-able and not like the PIXIE dust thing that seems to of crashed and burned for massive harddrives

My guess is the combined forces of the studios and manufacturers will find ways of delaying the technology, at least for HT use. It wouldn't surprise me though if HVD turned out to be the eventual successor to BR/HD-DVD though - I mean, let's be honest, we already know that in 5-7 years time they'll be expecting us to upgrade again. I believe Sony (Daddy Blu-Ray of all people) are actively (although rather furtively) very interested in HVD and have had prototype equipment delivered to them already.

With those capacities though (200-300Gb now, but another article I read a few months back mentioned that they're experimenting with disks that can hold up to a terabyte), there's a LOT of possibilities. Assuming Sony really are seeing this as a future HT format - that's the kind of thing that could be the supporting medium for Ultra-HD or something even more esoteric.
