Just been wondering about this because I've just priced up a HTPC including the MCE software and a kind message said that MCE had to be sold with a full system.
Now, if I build a sytem just after chrimbo then want to upgrade to Vista Ultimate 12 months later, do I have to buy another machine or will there be upgrade packs for existing users ?

As per current OEM EULA you just need to purchase a new HDD or a new motherboard then purchase your new copy of windows OEM with that job done :)
Vista Ultimate Edition will be available as to OEM's or as a retail package
so your covered on both bases (dont see Ultimate being cheap though)
XP-MCE is an OEM channel only product
p.s. what have you specced up..?

very much doubt it! ;) Can't say any more than that.

I think I know what you are referring to - but it will still be available to small independent system builders.
transferring OEM licenses will probably end though

Only a starter HTPC at the moment and I'm asking for cash for Christmas as we have a second addition to the family arriving in January so a PC isn't on top of the "Really Need This" list :)
AMD 64 3000+
Asustek 939 Mobo with 6150 chipset
512MB RAM
Samsung Spinpoint 80Gig HDD
LG DVD-RAM writer (Already got)
Plus 5m DVI cable, Belkin Wireless keyboard/mouse and maybe a Harmony 525 remote and a USB receiver.
As I said, this is a starter setup and I'll be expanding on the RAM, bigger drives and a dual tuner DVB-T card or 2 as and when I am alowed to by things. Also looking at the Silverstone LC11B case with the VFD.
In the future, I would like to have a Server that houses all of the HDDs and Tuner cards that would supply all media to the Lounge TV, Bedroom TV and Kitchen/Dining Room TV, but unless I choose to go with SageTV this wont happen until Vista Ultimate comes out.
In my head it's a complete system.......but there is a hill to climb before that :)

Currently you can indeed purchase a new HDD and along with it a copy of any Windows OEM version thats a fact I am a registered system builder myself.
As for the new version it would be intheir best interest to launch an upgrade version or maintain the current OEM EULA as preventing home users from upgrading or purchasing a new version of MCE is just foolish as I for one would never buy a complete new system just for a new version of MCE unless of course it would come to work for me aswell do my job and clean my house  :)

ofcourse you can at the moment. What I refer to is nothing about stopping system builders buying MCE (i.e back to 2004 terms) it's far far different.
Shame I can't explain myself, sorry :(
