Annoying PIN code on Sky - NOT an OFCOM requirement!

Just saw this posted in a Usenet newsgroup. The poster claimed to have written to OFCOM about the annoying PIN code that Sky are forcing on us subscribers, and got a response:

http://groups.google.com/group/uk.me...e=source&hl=en

"You will see from the Code that we do not require PIN protection on 15
or 18 certified content if it is broadcast post-watershed, neither do
we require that a PIN protection system be in place when recorded
programmes are wateched prior to the watershed. If Sky Plus has taken
the decision to build a mandatory PIN protection into the recording
facility on their equipment then this is a commercial decision for
them."

If this is true, then Sky are once again treating us with contempt. This PIN issue is annoying many people and Sky are hiding behind excuses, rather than giving users the option to disable it.

Apparently Sky want to push their image as the 'family friendly' service.

Don't risk your children being exposed to any of that evil stuff being offered by those dastardly non-encrypted TV systems. Pay Sky a bundle every month and save your kids from the dangers of free TV.

It's yet another astonishing piece of arrogance from Sky, made possible only by their pre-eminent market position, and is likely to rebound on them in the long term.
