Recievers vs. seperate Processors and power amps

I am considering getting for the first time a separate preamp and amplifier because I can get a great deal on the FAP T1 preamp. ($800 instead of $3000). I have never bought audio equipment in this price range and am wondering what additional price will i need to spend to take advantage of it.

If I buy an inexpensive amplifier (200-400), would it still sound better than an receiver at that price range? I have a small apartment. Will someone inexperienced notice the difference?
