Sony vpl-es2 screen help

Hi there am new to the forums but have spent much time reading.
Have the above projector and have used the projection calculator to work out screen size.
am going to make my own screen as im quite diy friendly but am confused with all the different materials that seem to crop up on here (mdf,Blackout cloth etc)
Has anyone got one of these PJ as i would be interested to find out what they are using as a screen
Have it on coffee table at moment but will be ceiling mounted when i move house shortly and i seem to get annoying black shadows above the pic beyond the usual bars. is this caused by the angle im facing it up at as its on its maximum tilt with a book underneath for extra height
many thanks
Robert
