Hey Roland - how noisy is a 1209 ?

ummmm - like the title !

Was wondering if it was an issue ?- I cut out a piece of cardboard using the dimensions for this thing - oh,my GOD !!! - Hence the question (having said that, it appears to be a highly thought of machine)

thanks mate

So long as the air can get out at the back you will surprised at how quite they are.

They have 4 large 12volt fans which makes it much quiter than an 808 or Cine8. I beleive it to be quiter than it's other competitors Sony 1292 & G90, Electrohome 9500, NEC 9PG

Air is drawn from the front around the lenses and expelled out the back. There is an additional fan in the middle of the cover which brings the air out of the convergence board.

The size of the projector is an advantage becuase it has a metal sheild which absorbs a lot of the heat. the amount of air the fans can move is good and I have not had a compliant about noise yet.

But be warned these are big buggers. that must have been some cornflake box.

Spectre has one in his cinema lets see what he says.

My 1209 doesn't bother me at only a couple of feet from my head. It's quieter than my HCPC sat at the other end of the room. If I was building a complete home cinema from scratch I'd build the projector into the ceiling and have ducts take the air away in an attempt to reduce the noise completely. But that's not possible now. (That's one for the future, Roland!)

thanks guys

- would ducting work Roland ? , I could probably do it, if all works out.

How would you guys rank the 1209 in terms of quality - as good as it gets ? or below that !

Once you get into 9" projectors getting a good picture is easy.

Making it fantastic can take days, litrally. You have so much contol over every function that it is a both a joy and a nightmare to set up. On most projectors you think "if I could just get that bit sharp" on a 1209 you can. Once you get to this level of projector the set up becomes super critical (so does the customer come that)

Always go for the "s" version which was able to handle component and HDTV direct.

Always duct if you can, they are quite but ANY noise from kit in a home cinema is unwanted.

The only projector I've ever seen beat a 1209 is the Barco Cine MAX with a Snell & Wilcox interpolator Gold and SDI feed.

Having said that a projector is only as good as the eqipment that is feeding it. You would have to be prepared to put a decent scaller on the back with good quality cables.

Barco never won any beatuy contests.

First 1200 came on board in Jan 93. I took delivery of the First Four units in the UK whilst working for IBM. (They were the most unrelible projectors I ever handled untill the software was upgraded). They only came out of IBM last year.

The 12** series chassis stayed the same but electronics and tubes changed much over the years. The 1209s was introduced in mid 96 and went out of production in late 1999 (a sad day at Barco. For tis my favorite projector, still.)

Can't answer your last question here.

Here's an idea for dealinig with noise from CRT projectors. It requires disconnecting fans though and some units will immediately go to standby when they "see" the fans as being off.

This is an idea...not tried yet.....

The idea is to draw cool air through the projector and the hot air to another area outwith the cinema. If possible I would try and run ducting from the rear of the projector and underneath (if ceiling mounted). Run this ducting to an external area or roof space...at he end of each section of ducting fit an expelair or large area fan. Wire these fans to SUCK air out the ducting.

With some cunning design you should be able to create a hideous monster that's SILENT.....and cool.

If anyone tries this let me know and take some pictures!

Gordon

I understand the 1209 to be among the very best video projectors suitable for home cinema.
Fed with a HCPC, the picture quality is just absolutely fantastic. And my projector has 9,500 hours on it.
If anyone wants to invest a couple of hours checking out my setup in Birmingham (in order to see for themselves the potential of HCPCs and 1209s - not as a sales exercise of any kind, but as a sharing of enthusiasm), so long as it's in office hours, then I'm happy to oblige.

It's been done.
Hideous and Silent .......Cool?

It can be done to the Barco range.
The fan speed is increased as the temperature rises.
Leave the sensors in place and put a few extra fans down the pipe.
Should support about 2amps. (Existing fans draw milliamps at 12v) standard PC type fans.
