SED - The reason to wait???
I know, I know ............. that there will always be something better around the corner but this really does look like something to wait for.
I have been looking to replace my 20" 8 year old Sony CRT for sometime but everytime I get enthused by a LCD screen I watch some football - see the grass and think not yet. To me it always looks like mushy peas with no definition.
It just seems to me that LCD cannot do the resolution of fine detail from SD that a CRT can. I will never get SKY, so HD for me is going to be several years away.
LCD is in such an early stage of development that maybe this is the way forward. Looks like it could be cheaper and have fewer difficulties in scaling up for the bigger screens.
Trouble is and I know this to be true what will be the next big thing in '06?

I agree, im looking at buying a LCD cause of Sky HD and Xbox 360. Sky HD looks like it will go live in Feb 2006, These displays might be available in March/April next year, might be worth waiting till then to see what there like?

Canon Expo 2005
Canon Expo 2005
They showed off some really hot 36-inch SED display prototypes, which besides registering an average of half the metered power consumption of similar sized LCD and plasma TVs, featured a totally independent viewing angles and a 100,000:1 contrast ratio. It was kind of crazy, when the screen went black it was like the whole panel disappeared.

I'm going to get me a nice 720p LCD now, and in 3-5 years when things have settled down, I might be able to pick up a 1080p SED that actually takes 1080p inputs, and a player that actually has 1080p outputs.
IMO there is too much 'noise' in display technology now, and 720p LCD/plasma is the relatively quiet, sorted out bit.

I just read the review of that Brightside Panel. I like the side by side comparision (in a dark room with no lights) with the other LCD screen when a black screen was shown. The standard LCD was lit up like a Xmas tree but you couldn't even see the BrightSide panel

Sorry to be the voice of reason, but where have you hear just around the corner before?
I predict 2 things.
1. The release dates, especially into the UK, will slip back by a year.
2. SED will look amazing, but will also be in very short supply so the prices will be excessive until they licence the tech to other companies.
Remember how long it took for LCD to become defacto? over 3 years.
All in all you could be waiting a very long time.

Either that or it stands for Sometime Everyone's Dream... I agree with mister meaner that this technology is so much better that it'll cost phone numbers and only be available in really big sizes to start with, that's generally how it works. I'm also a little concerned about that micro-gap between two sheets of glass - sounds like it might be fragile to me.
Still gonna buy an LCD soon and maybe SED in years when it enters normal price territory.

I watch 90% tv broadcast so current lcds are a huge waste of money for me.

I've chosen to wait also, I've recently got a new CRT to last me a few years until things have come to light over SED.

With 95% of all large flat screens being plasma (and one in three of those from Panasonic) there would scarcely seem room for another type of display, least of all one based on the new technology of Surface Conduction Electron Emission. Yet, Toshiba and Canon have invested $1.4bn so far in producing the SED screen and look set to bring it to market by 2007.
First announced in closed meetings at CES last January (and not on view to the public in Berlin) the revolutionary SED screen is based on – the Cathode Ray Tube. Yes, those large glass bottles that nobody wants any more (despite better colour, blacker blacks, wider viewing angle and longer life) are set to appear in a new shape – flat. As in THIN and flat.
As in thinner than your average plasma or LCD, using much less power and with a dark-room contrast ratio that is just ninety times greater than a good plasma (100,000:1 compared to 1,100:1). Couple that with very fast response time, with almost zero lag to cause motion blur, and a power consumption of just 160 watts and it looks a very attractive proposition indeed. No prices were quoted, but previous leaks suggest it will be comparable with other flat screen technologies.
Panasonic may be regretting their decision to build the largest plasma screen plant in the world (though they have two years to make a killing).

Yeah i'm still think about a LCD, but i'm worried about football, looks ok on my 32" toshiba 32zp38. Suppose it could depend on how premership hi-def will look but then theres always the world cup next year, ruled out plasma due to image rentention and screen burn.
